Well, I've never done anything like this before - most I've done is make signatures for my WoW characters, so don't laugh or make fun!
Also, I'm pretty new here so I'm hoping nobody else has done this one yet.

I did work on most of the face, but right below the hat is the part you'll notice most. Before the shadow from the hat didn't actually go all the way up to the hat on the left and far right. The shadows now match the original Freddy image.

I'm not particularly comfortable about calling extra attention to myself but I was hoping someone would have commented on my photoshops just so I could get a little feedback (terrible, not bad etc).
I was only wondering since they are my first 2 real things I've done if they are any good at all or are they utter crap? I can't tell because being such a newbie at it, to me they look pretty neat but I have no idea what people look for in a photoshop. They may be really obvious and ugly.

Anyone want to throw me a quickie critique? It would be much appreciated. :)

Your stuff is actually really good considering your experience. The only problem I see with your Kill Bill one is the Alex with the eye patch. Alex is facing a few degrees to the side of where the original character was facing, so the hair looks funky and off center.

The Clerks one is also really good. It looks like there is a blurry bit on Alex's neck, but that's no big deal. And something looks off with Dan, but the fact that I'm not really sure what the problem is means that you are this close to having it perfect.

Again, amazing work for a first and second try. I do not doubt that there are people who have been doing this for years who don't make stuff as good as you.

There are TONS of Photoshop tutorials (some great, many not so great). Pixel Perfect is a great place to get fundamentals. Also, like Bert mentions, play play play. Photoshop is SO deep that you'll have to play with the various controls and get a feel for what they can do.

For these types of images, Extract, smudge, sponge and other similar tools are invaluable. At least for me.

i don't want to step on any toes or anything but i felt like i had to tweak that indiana canata shop a bit, the hat brim was really bothering me (was cut off) so i got the orignal, copied the hat brim and then added a shadow on jeff so it looks like he's wearing a hat and it's not just floating there.

it was kind of a rush job and the shadow still kinda sucks looking at it now, but it does look a bit more natural.

If your having trouble with shading might i suggest a certain show that revision produces called pixel perfect. im sure bert will be able to help you out. and yeah im pretty sure you already know about that show

For shading, it is hard to give advice without knowing what you are going for, but try lowering the flow, exposure, and/or opacity depending on the tool.

EDIT: Not to sound sappy or anything but I really want to say "thanks" again. This Photoshop stuff has got me excited about learning something new and it's been a while since I have found something I enjoy. You know as you get older and your dreams kind of fall to the wayside because you have to pay bills to survive? You end up working in an office at 31 doing boring as hell crap you never thought you would do. ('Cause we were all going to be famous, right? :)) Eventually you get all caught up in normal, everyday stuff (or WoW to take you away from all that normal, everyday stuff) and forget about your music or art, etc. So yeah I suppose this does sound hella dramatic but I'm really glad I'm having fun learning something useful. :D

I download the large h264 (Quicktime) versions of the shows and open them with Quicktime. This lets me scroll through the show looking for shots that look good. Generally I try for the individual close-ups first and then the shots with just two of them (the head shots will be higher rez that way). Then I'll go through the show looking for the right expressions. Many times I just stumble across the best facial expressions. Then, thanks to Quicktime, I can copy the frame and then paste it into Photoshop.

Thanks to Bert and Pixel Perfect I've started using masks to 'cut' out the heads/faces. This makes blending easier. I'll blend then mask into the images rather than their faces directly. I may work directly with the face if needed, but that's usually color/contrast correction.

Not tryin' to brown nose or anything but I took a photoshop class (in high school) and that is not easy, although Bert does make it look super fun and easy on Pixel Perfect. I do really boring stuff all day. I work at a place that copies x-ray films for law firms to use in court cases. Pretty unspectacular, except for the random moments when we find cool/gross/weird stuff in the films like light bulbs in uncomfortable places (no, not the back of a Volkswagen), penile implants and surgery equipment doctors lost inside people.

I think the 'shops come out alright because I really kind of enjoy being meticulous. I mean, I get bored nitpicking every little thing and going over everything in the photo a million times eventually but it does take a while until I get to that point. I can spend a good 4 or 5 hours straight going over something. *shrug*
I'm kinda weird.

And I'll try and join the chat - I had already gotten Colloquy, I just got a little daunted when I popped in for the first time last week. :)

Ooo Thank you! I wish I had more real pictures instead of screen shots from the show. Their skin doesn't look very "real" when you use a pic like that - it looks almost cartoonish because of the lack of texture/imperfections etc.

It was a really good lesson in learning to blend though. :D

Yes. Like I said though, it makes their faces somewhat "cartoony" but it's the best resource we have so... *shrug*.

I still like the idea someone brought up about having the boys give us blue screen photographs! From all different angles. >: )

Anywho, as TNV pointed out on Flickr the lighting is all screwed with the shower one as I didn't really take the time to do it well. I may post a quick fix. I'm gonna ask him first and see if I even made it look better - I still kinda suck at lighting.

I joined the Flickr group and added the pic. I'm definitely for putting together a separate grouping for stock photos of Alex, Dan, and Jeff. I think it would be very helpful, as the selection was pretty limited from what I saw of my search.. but then again, I was being lazy and didn't want to take screen captures of the shows. :o

Tyty! I actually just started slightly doing this - it was kind of like an "AhHa!" moment that hadn't fully formed as an idea in my head yet. You articulating it is going to make me actively do it. :D

Erin! You actually did an amazing job for your first attempt. The only thing that went wrong was the angle. You just started off with the wrong angled picture of Jeff. Otherwise it's killer.
Are you taking pictures of them from the show? 'Cause so far that's been a godsend for me to get almost whatever angle I want. The pics are fuzzier but hey - we take what we can get.

I liked having Dan painted up like a kid at Halloween instead of making him plain or blending the skull onto him.
