Anybody here running mac on their x86 PC? It's quite an interesting thing to mess around with. And I also have Parallel Desktop for my "Mac" so I can run Vista, XP, and Ubuntu. :) Anybody else here tried this?

you mean hacked? Yup. And i gave up on it last month. Its support is going downhill. It's getting less and less SSE2 support, and as of now, it looks like osx86 hacking will be over at 10.5 Leopard. No point in getting deeply involved now. Unless you know kernel hacking/coding.
On an iMac or legit Apple product? havent used it for an extended amount of time so i cant say.

That's exactly what I'm talking about! :)
I'm using my Gateway 503GR 3.0GHz SSE3. :) I can't wait until JAS makes a PC version of Leopard when it comes out.
And no, not hacked... patched. :P It's getting less and less SSE2 support because most people have newer computers(Mine is 2 almost three years old and is SSE3) or nowadays custom built ones with SSE3. I'm installing ReteStrak's version of XP on Parallel Desktops on my 'Mac'. lol.

lol...nice...yeah, i've really started to love Osx...but i don't think JaS is going to release a 10.5 DVD because he said he was getting out of the scene before 10.4.8 came out...he did put out a 10.4.8 update, but Kiko did most of the work, JaS just turned it into an installer...i really like JaS and i really want him to continue this, but he had a really good reason for not continuing it and i respect him.

I know what you meant. However a Mac is also a personal computer. People don't get that.
I don't agree with all the hackitosh stuff. If you want a Mac, get a Mac. You can buy one for not much more then a leagal copy of XP Pro

i agree with you somewhat...i have a Mac Mini (built-in to my car) and a MacBook Pro AND OSx86 on a $500 Toshiba laptop (hackintosh)...sometimes i wanna go places and have OSx but not a $3000 laptop that i'd get REALLY pissed if it gets stolen, i'd rather go with a $500 laptop that if it gets stolen, i'd still be pissed but it would've cost me 1/6 the price...

I've always wanted a Mac Mini. lol. I should go search eBay... And about the laptop, very wise I must say. The only problem with having 'hackintosh'(never heard anybody call it that until you guys just did now), is if you're in bad with the police/feds(for let's say just some illegal things done over the net... lol), you can be sued by Mac as well because it's illegal to have Mac on your Windows "recommended" personal computer. It's only supposed to be for the Apple corp and also Apple corp testers and developers. lol. I've tried Linux before, but I just hate the whole, compile, deal... I couldn't even figure out how to set up my wireless reciever on Ubuntu Linux. On another sidenote, I love having Mac on my computer.

I know a guy that sold his old Shuttle system on ebay and bought an iMac with the money. It cost him very little out of pocket, basically traded up.
Keep an eye on the sale items in the Apple store (right side of the store a little ways down). There are some deals in there from time to time, you just need to keep your eyes open. Also, if you are a student (or not) you can get the educational discount from them which is quite nice. Craigslist is also a good place to look, I see old Macs up there all the time

i use Linux as well and i think it's pretty good...but that's a whole nother discussion for another forum...and i use pirated copies of WinXP on ALL my systems so if i'm somewhere with a laptop and i get into trouble with the cops, i'd be in trouble for that too...also, if you're going around dumpster diving (for example) with your laptop (bad idea) and a cop arrests you, 99% of the time they don't give a crap how much pirated software you have.

You DO realize that JaS has 'retired' from osx86 and wont be cracking Leopard right? Oh, and on osx86project/insanelymac, i go by the nick "AppleLegal" :) The lack of SSE2 support isnt cause computers are newer or older. It's because there's no one around that bothers to patch the files needed for iTunes and everything else to run. You DO know that 10.4.8 still runs on the 10.4.4 kernel on hacked x86 boxes right?
Oh, and the main thing Kiko did afaik is just reading a help.plist that Apple includes with all their installers and removing/replacing files. Good work? yeah, but nothing overly special/complicated. Though that was still messed up by including R2D2 which isnt fully compatible anymore.
Leopard wont be hacked or patched. There's no one really left that A. knows enough and B. cares enough to do so. Besides, like a few people (cant remember who exactly) said - the way to go is creating a BIOS -> EFI emulator or compatibility layer.
Most old macs that are selling cheaply use PPC processor - not x86. They're not worth buying anymore. Wont have any new software within 2 years from now.

For the part you said about that no one will patch Leopard, I think he calls himself HotISO or something, but he also has a version of x86 Intel OS X, I downloaded his version for 10.4.8, but after restarting the computer, AirPort didn't work at all after that. But he could possibly patch Leopard.

i believe Kiko and JaS were the only 2 who released OSx86 10.4.8 updates

HotISO has done NOTHING but rip off JaS's releases and repack them as their own. They're complete idiots :)
Oh, and the reason .4.8 didnt work from them is cause they used a patch with R2D2 included(The original patch Kiko released). Which broke things.

Well I run Mac OS X on one of my old dells, alongside Linux, like my favorite saying goes: "You can have "outdated" hardware, but if you have great software it isn't outdated."

Only problem is that apple constantly releases updates to programs that add more features and make the old version look not so good in comparison :\

Not a problem if you don't hack the thing. I love when updates come out. A lot of times it changes how I work for the better. And when the new OSs come out its like getting a whole new computer

I can't agree more, "If you want a mac, get a mac", i got my first mac a few years ago, never looked back again.
Sadly i must say that i feel like Apple are starting to slack, i had quite a serious OS problem, the 10.4.8 just didn't start, i was so angry, it never happened b4.
Well, 10x to
