I love a big red.
Shiraz (Syrah), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot.
Leading on from the red wines are fortified wines.
Masher mentioned Port. I am not a fan of the Spain Porto style wines - too thin, but love the more heavily fortified Aussie ports, or better yet a Tokay.
In the same style, I enjoy desert wines as well - recently becoming a fan of Canadian Ice Wines, and enjoy Muscats, late harvest Semillon (and other sweet, late harcest wines).
Something a little out there are botrytised wines in many varieties (these are grapes infected with a fungus - they are basically rotting on the vine, but create the most magnificently sweet wines). These are amazing.
So - yeah - wine nut.
But not a wine snob, I enjoy beer, as well as the occassional cocktail (does a fermented cactus juice slurpee count as a cocktail?).

What is 'Caesars' ?The really nasty, ugly, Canadian cousin of a Bloody Mary ... essentially a Bloody Mary with clamato juice instead of tomato juice.
I generally like Canadians, but the Casesar is one of the nastiest things I think I have ever drunk.
Except maybe homemade grappa, or kava (in Vanuatu) - which both had the effect of making my lips go numb for 2 hours.

Didn't learn that one in my australian bar tending class of 1992. Or maybe I did. When practising pouring beers, you go through alot of 'pots'. Someone had to drink them and I was one of two guys in the class.
I had grappa with an old Italian man in his restaurant in soho, london in 1995 and got knocked sideways. Tasted like nothing, almost like vapour, then light and fruity when you swallow, followed by a gasoline burning sensation coming up the pipes into the mouth and down into the lungs. Then . . . a full 25 mins later, you get drunk.

Well, i'm a huge fan of vodka, and i've recently really started enjoying the "Bond Special" Vodka Martini, Shaken not stirred!
I have to say it. the "Bond Special" is the one of the pussiest of all cocktails! not to mention the Vodka Martini isn't the Martini bond originally drank, The cocktail from the book is a real ball buster of a drink! That being said, My drink of choice other than beer will always be a Slippery which consists of 1 part VO whiskey and 1 part Anisette served at room temperature in a vodka shot glass. The Anisette is preferably homemade and very strong. It is an old family drink.

I am new to drinking by 2 years.
I am around the unholy trio's age...so it is not like I just turned legal or anything. I just never drank.
A couple of years ago I learned of a stomach disorder that I have and I discovered alcohol helps the issue.
So I try and drink something every day.
While I have not gotten used to Beer yet (Not from lack of trying)... I have found that Bully Hill's Love My Goat (http://corkd.com/wine/view/1560-Love_My_Goat) red wine is awesome.
And I also discovered good ole Jameson Whiskey... and me grand pa would be so proud.

As far as wine goes, I prefer red to white but have very little knowledge about wine in general. Nice with a meal or on a night in.
Beer is something I get in the mood for sometimes, but in general I stay away. Starting to like it more and more though.
Cocktails (mostly Vodka based) is where it's at for me. Sex on the beach is a surefire choice, but I am hooked on white Russians at the moment. Weirdly enought it happened before I ever saw the Big Lebowski. I think I might go make one now.... (it's 9pm over here, in case you are horrified)

When I was in uni, Black Russian were my drink (Kahlua, Vodka, Coke). I also drank a lot of beer (paying for that now - trying to remove my 1 keg abs).
BUT my passion is wine. Good wine. Expensive wine ($50-60/bottle), or wine that tastes expensive (Banrock Station Shiraz - $5/cask). Downside of my current home is that there aren't really any wineries around here ... and I really miss going to cellar doors at vineyards for tastings.

For beers, I like most good quality ones, but prefer reds if available. Not a big wine drinker.
Mixed drink would have to be an Irish Car-Bomb:

For Wines I like a good Porto or Port, usually a good Tawny (more caramel and oaky in taste, very smooth sipping wine) or Red (bright and fruity, great with desert). Or a good dark sherry, as sherry is much lighter in ALC.
For beers Guiness Lager or Modelo Negra or Sam A Cherry Wheat, Oktoberfest.
For mixed Irish Car Bombs, Baileys and Cream over the Rocks, Fuzzy Navels, REAL Long Island Ice Teas (with 5 hard liqueurs) hrmm...

I have to agree with comparison of beer and ice cream; different brands and types are so diverse, you have to try a lot before finding a truly great beer for your tastes.
That said, I believe it applies to ALL alcoholic beverages.
Besides, I tend to associate tangible sensory stimuli (read smell and flavors) with emotion and memory. Thus, depending on my mood, my palate will change. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.
Comfort: Porters and stouts, especially Spaten Optimator.
Fun: Anejo tequila, mojitos, flair drinks like Fiery Dr. Pepper!
Relaxing: Single malt scotch, a super-cold Vesper (the "James Bond")
Homesick: Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley, Rogue brand beers, Henry Winehards BEFORE those bastards from Annheiser-Busch ruined it
Party until I don't remember my own name: Red Bull and Vodka
Birthdays: Good champagne. It's bittersweet, like knowing you're getting older. There's the fun and great flavor at first...but then you get the tab.

I was saying that -I- don't play favorites. I drink alot, and I don't seem picky, although I have some things I choose not to drink, there are many more I choose to drink. Also, no matter what everyone says in this thread, favorites change, and it really has more to do with mood in relation to available options.

I'd like to give a shout out to all of my Bloody Caesar Canucks from your eternally grateful lower 50 buddies. Specifically all of us here in Virginia because it is popular here. I had no idea that it was invented in Canada. Anybody i know that likes a bloody mary style drink, only drinks them Caesar style now. I adore them. i would drink them instead of having a meal. Cheers!! :)
THANK YOU!
Someone finally understands!
Haha
Caesars are the best.
