I just put up a new blog entry (http://virb.com/fuzzytypewriter/blog/269339) on VIRB. Good friend of mine Pat Grubb (http://virb.com/neuropolis) is just graduating with his degree in animation. He's engineered a really cool demo reel for the big final presentation night this week, hoping to make some contacts and get his name out there. He's new to VIRB, but he plans on using it as a vehicle for his animation and other projects. The demo's dope as hell, so go check it out, and if you're a VIRB member, friend him up and say hey.

10:05am - "This last statistic blew my mind: in the US of all the music releases in 2006, 32% were digital-only releases. They weren't released on a CD. Live concerts, independents. Look how far we've come. A THIRD of the music released in this country was digital only."
"iTunes is clearly leading the way. We're going to ship a new version of iTunes tonight to support some new products. The biggest new feature: ringtones."
10:06am - Big applause. "We're going to do ringtones in our own special way. Of course these are for the iPhone. What we want: rather than let someone else make ringtones, we people to be able to make their own." Build your own from songs bought in iTunes, 500k participating songs...
10:07am - "Our ringtones are going to cost just $.99 in addition to the song." Psh! You have to pay a second time to use a purchased song as a ringtone?!
0:15am - "It's the most popular music player in history. People just love it. We want to make it better, and customers have told us how we can make it better. Customers want to watch video on their nanos on an even larger, brighter display. We'd like to put Cover Flow in, we think it's a great way to browse your music library."
"Games. More storage, and a full metal design. We're introducing a new nano here today... let me show it to you." It's the fatty!
10:16am - "It's incredibly tiny, this is the new nano, it's incredibly thin. It's REALLY nice." Huge applause. "Let me show you some bigger pictures of it... comes in beautiful colors. So what's the video like? New nano: larger 2-inch screen, it's going to look the same as it did on the iPod video, it's the same QVGA resolution. We've achieved this with a screen with the highest pixel density we've ever shipped."

And we've got Cover Flow. Take your thumb, roll it around the wheel, it looks really nice. It's pretty stunning, all in such a tiny device. We're really, really happy with this."
10:18am - "We're also including 3 games bundled in with the nano. Let me show you one now, it's called Vortex." Demo time -- it's basically Arkanoid made circular. "We've also done some other games we're selling on iTunes."
Demoing EA's Sudoku game.
10:20am - "Isn't that incredible? All in a product this big. Video, new UI with Cover Flow, games... let's take a look at the new iPod nano." Demo time again, Beatles album artwork in screen. He does this every time!

10:24am - "When we went about replacing the most popular music player in the world we took this really seriously. We think we've nailed it with the new nano. The battery life is awesome: 24 hours audio, 5 hours video playback." Applause and cheers.
10:25am - "Let's talk about storage: a 4GB and an 8GB version. The 4GB version will come in silver, the 8GB will come in all the colors. The 4GB will be priced at just $149. The 8GB version will be just $199." Applause.
10:28am - "We've got new iPod Classics: full metal design, even thinner than their predecessors. The new classic is starting at 80GB audio 30 hours, video 6 hours. And we've got the whole enhanced UI on the new iPod classic." Sorry, iPod touch is a no go! Unless it's a one last thing...
10:29am - We're going to offer a slightly thicker one as well... and it's going to have 160GB." applause. "This BOGGLES the mind! This new 160GB, which is far smaller than the original iPod, puts 40k songs in your pocket. Even better: battery life. 40 hours audio, 7 hours video."
10:30am - "The 80GB used to sell for 350, now it's 250.The 160GB is $350." Applause. "They're both available today, they're shipping and be in stores by this weekend. We think you're gonna love 'em, and the enclosure is just gorgeous. So let's take a look at the iPod lineup for this holiday season..." review time.
10:31am - "This is an incredibly iPod lineup for this holiday season." Applause. But he's not done. "But... we're not done yet. Far from it."
"When we introduced the iPhone in Jan, we said it was the best iPod ever. and iPhone owners agree with us, it's incredible with its multi-touch interface, it is the best iPod ever. People have been asking us when we're going to bring this technology to the iPod. The answer is we're going to do it today. And this is what the product looks like." It's a friggin iPhone!
It's called the iPod Touch.
10:32am - "It's the same size screen as the iPhone, but it's even thinner. It's 8mm thin. Unbelievable. The new iPod touch. It's one of the 7 wonders of the world." Laughter.

Scroll through the artists with a flick of your finger. Turn it into a landscape position, it goes into Cover Flow, it's just magical."
10:34am - "All on this 8mm device. Let's look at video... all on this gorgeous 3.5-inch widescreen display. And photos... just like the iPhone this is the best way to share photos on a portable device. Ever. Flick through them, pinch them to make them larger or smaller."
10:38am - "Let's take a look at photos here... it's great, let's go into an album... I can just go like this, flick through these photos. There's just never been a better way to share photos with friends on the go. It's sooo nice. Turn it back. Boom." Icons: calendar, contacts, clock, calc, settings, music, videos, photo..."I showed you the clean side... I was keeping a secret. We've built in WiFi to the iPod touch." The antenna looks, um, bad.
10:39am - 802.11b/g -- "Others have done this and it's failed. We understand why it's failed, and we know what to do make it successful. Well, what's the problem with WiFi? Well, part of the problem is getting onto WiFi... you may be fine at home and the office, but anywhere in between can be challenging."
http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/09/dsc_7647.jpg
10:40am - "You may log in but you'll get a screen. Even walking through Stanford University you get a login page... so you can build in the hardware but you can't get the network [without the page]. So what do you do about that? We're going to add an application to the touch: the Safari web browser."
ConorKilpatrick
09-05-2007, 05:48 PM
10:41am - This really is the phone-less iPhone. "But besides being able to log into WiFi, you get an incredible web browser! It is the best web browser on any mobile device, and it's built in to the iPod touch."
10:42am - "We're very, very excited about this. First time EVER on a music player to have a browser built in." Uh, totally not true: look at Archos. "Why stop there?" YouTube's on the Touch as well.
10:43am - "Watch millions of free videos streaming over WiFi to the iPod touch. Let me show you these things..." Demo time! The hidden icons are now apparent -- the two missing were Safari and YouTube. Still looks a little sparse though!
Looking on the NYT. "We can go over here... boom." Aw, it was a little boom that time.
10:44am - Steve's now browsing Facebook. "We're pretty excited about this." Applause.

10:45am - Bookmarked videos... "You get the idea, this gives you a feeling for what Safari and YouTube are like on the new iPod touch. We've built WiFi in and we've made it USABLE. We're REALLY excited about this."
10:46am - Connector on the bottom, but no speakers. "This is a worldwide product, the first touch product Apple's going to ship outside the US, it's going to be shipping all around the world."
ConorKilpatrick
09-05-2007, 05:52 PM
10:47am - Review time: multi touch, widescreen iPhone display, Cover Flow, Wifi, Safari / YouTube... "We're going to offer it in two configurations, the first is 8GB, the second is 16GB of storage. Again, how do you fit all this in here?"
10:48am - So, 8GB is $299... the price for the 16GB is $399." Less applause on the second one. "Both models are available in just a few weeks... they'll be shipping this month."

Hold on, now. Do you mean the drive formatting? You pretty much have to format any drive to be able to read/write to it reliably. A certain amount of disk space is always lost (well, not really but explaining decimals is boring) in the process. Apple are not sticking gigs of bloatware in your iPod in any case.

A certain amount of disk space is always lost (well, not really but explaining decimals is boring) in the process.
The fast explanation (while still boring) is that there are 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte (rather than 1000). So basically every mb is underestimated by 24 kb. The scope of this becomes more visible as the drive size increases. For instance, my hard drive is 100GB but registers as approximately 90.

well, since you asked .....
It basically comes down to the binary concept. Everything in a computer is binary at its root. Storage capacities are affected by this because the physical memory locations are binary.
A binary number is a number whose digits are expressed as 1 or 0. So, binary numbers work in powers of 2. 1024 is 2 to the 9th power. 1024 in binary is 1111111111.
This is similar to the base-10 system that you're familiar with. For instance, in the number 47 (in base 10), this number represents 7 groups of 1 and 4 groups of 10. The ones column is the number of groups of 10 to the 0 power (which is 1) and the tens column is 10 to the 1 power (which is 10).
In much the same way that you can't drop the "7" from 47 (and still call it the same number), you can't drop the extra 24 from 1024.
If you're still reading at this point you deserve a purple heart. Nipple, orange, fruit paste. Have you seen my aardvark?

Isn't the style of hard drive different as well? Flash based and the older, bulkier technology? Flash is faster but getting anything higher than 16GB is too expensive right now. Is that correct?
But Labor's right. You're not just paying for a phone, you're paying for the web browser, email, YouTube, widescreen functions...
It's a cool lineup because there's something for everybody. I'm assuming Labor likes the 160GB option for all his music. The wireless iTunes store wouldn't appeal to him as much because he doesn't purchase his music that way. But for me, it's really pretty ideal. I'd like more storage than 8GB, but it isn't a deal breaker because I've been perfectly happy with my 8GB nano for a while now. I'm really playlist-centric anyway. The new Shuffles and nanos are great for joggers or anybody who needs something a little more portable.
Personally, I'm pretty close to making the decision to buy the iPhone. I'll still be using my nano for morning workouts, running, biking, etc.

It isn't that horrible using the non-wifi browser. As long as you don't expect it to be blazing fast and you're realistic, you won't have a problem with it.

Take the AppleTV. I can choose to sync it to my laptop in a number of different ways. I can have it remove a show from its drive after I watch it. I can adjust playlists manually on the laptop. When will I be able to take out my iPod at the train station, decide I want a video or song sitting on my computer at home, adjust my sync preferences on the iPod, and pull that video or song right to my iPod?
I guess it's all a matter of having an all-encompassing wi-fi net over my little world or having a stronger signal from my router, maybe a stronger antennae on the iPod itself. Could this happen? Would it happen sooner than a 1TB Shuffle?

Not long at all. The built-in Wi-Fi means we are half there already. iTunes has long had the ability to connect to devices remotely as well. Rather through some sort of specialized dongle or our existing adapters, remote synching is a logical extension of the device.

You could do this now if you had the desire, patience, and knowledge to develop your own "third party" software. I believe that everything that you mention is presently technologically possible. Further, if you give me like $50K and 6 months - I'll hook you up.

The setup I'm suggesting would pretty much make the idea of running out of space on a hard drive relatively moot. If I were Apple I'd be working on that shit right now.

Anywhere that has wifi access.
As for storage, you could theoretically add new shit to the phone, sync back to the house, delete from the phone, and import new stuff from the house. Again, if you built it you could probably do this automatically. So, Paper's at house A and rips a CD. Said content goes to House B (where he lives). Said content is deleted from iPhone. New podcasts that have been downloaded are pushed back to phone. It's a fairly simply leap to automation. You have built-in events to look for - you wouldn't even have to worry about timing it or anything complex like that.

Last time I checked a nano wasn't $49. But yeah, the iPhone definitely has it's money worth of extras. Not the least of hwich is the fact that it's a phone, and a computer.

One could also argue that iPhone is geared toward smart phone users that want the ability to store files and play music. Whereas the iPod is geared toward music lovers who wish to take a large portion of their collection on the go.
There is a difference in how people see the two devices, however subtle it may be.

Here are some high-level features (which I have tried most of):
* Stream music and video from your computer
* Screen captures and mouse click support
* iTunes remote control
* File browsing
* Run AppleScripts remotely
* iSight image capture
* Spotlight search
* Ability to add additional application support

Another thing that this clip reminded me of, is that I found a new site that is made specifically for the iPhone.
http://textoniphone.com has a bunch of books that you can read on your phone. The web site tracks where you leave off, and keeps a reading list available.
Best part? It's free baby.

Truth. Plenty of cellphones are now music players. They cost almost the same price, if oyu want to avoid a contract, and they will hold maybe a gig, two at the most. The iPhone is just trumping all of these phones. It isn't meant to be the iPod. An apple laptop will hold and play music too, and I'm sure it has a sizable harddrive, and definitely a bigger screen. To me that isn't a "glorified iPod.

I take issue with the idea that MS is forging new territories in technology while Apple is only playing with design. The iPhone is pretty revolutionary. I'm not attracted to being fancy schmancy. Okay that's not entirely true. I AM and I do oogle the IPhone. I just don't think the two items are in competition with each other, and to try to put them as such kind of comes of as petty MS v. Apple mess.

Jenna Fischer separates from husband
‘The Office’ star has been married to James Gunn for six years
Updated: 8:00 p.m. ET Sept 5, 2007
LOS ANGELES - “The Office” star Jenna Fischer and her husband James Gunn have separated, her publicist confirmed to “Access Hollywood.”
“We have chosen to separate. We are sorry for any pain this causes family and friends,” a statement released to People magazine read. “The enthusiasm we have expressed for each other’s lives, spirits and careers is real — we have been each other’s cheerleader and friend during the past six years and continue to be so now and in the future.”
The couple married six years ago. Fisher and Gunn met, according to People magazine, through his brother, former “Gilmore Girls” actor Sean Gunn.
Fischer is well known for playing receptionist Pam Beesly on “The Office.” She has also appeared in “Blades of Glory,” and is next up in “The Brothers Solomon,” a comedy due out on Sept. 7.
Gunn wrote the screenplay for “Scooby-Doo,” “Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” and “Slither,” a horror film which Fischer had a role in.
Earlier this year, in May, Fischer fractured four bones in her back after slipping on a marble staircase at an event in New York City.

I tend to agree, but her WIRED cover also shows that she doesn't mind baring some skin.
What really attracts me, though, is her comic timing and thoughtfulness. I fall in love with her all over again with every episode of the Office. She's genuinely funny.
Possibly I'd be more impressed if I were familiar with her work. If you were to take her personality out of the equation (which I have - because I know nothing of it), I've seen dozens of more attractive women on the internet already this week and it's only Thursday morning.

well, since you asked .....

You'll be waiting a while for an 80GB iPhone. A hard drive is the only cost effective way to deliver 80GB at the moment. As was said earlier, the cost of that much flash memory would be prohibitive.

Well CNN has an article on it's site called "Early adopters sour over iPhone price cut". It pretty much talks about the annoucements from yesterday and how some people are upset about the price drop.
The reason I'm bringing it up is because according to the article if you purchased the phone in the last 14 days you can get a refund for the price difference..
Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said anyone who purchased an iPhone within the past 14 days and has the receipt can get a full refund under Apple's return policy if they haven't opened the product. If they have opened it, they still can get a refund of the price difference.
That's pretty cool that they're allowing that to happen. They could be absolute a-holes about it and say, "Sorry about your luck."

Well to FURTHER comment on Apple's Phenomenal Customer Service....
Steve Jobs gives all iPhone owners $100 back
El Jobso is "confident" Apple's made the right decision to lower the price of the iPhone yesterday -- and really, we can't fault them for knocking some cash off the top to attract new buyers, why is cheaper gear a bad thing all of a sudden? But even given the outcry, we definitely didn't see this one coming. In another open letter to his people, Jobs states that he's giving all iPhone owners a $100 Apple gift certificate (details to follow in the next week -- it goes without saying this will only apply to people who bought before the price drop). Well, that's mighty kind of you Steve. And definitely unprecedented in the consumer electronics industry that a company would give cash back to early adopters -- those most accustomed to buying a gadget first, asking questions later, and bottling their complaints when said gadget later drops dramatically in price.

Here's the open letter (http://www.apple.com/hotnews/openiphoneletter/):
To all iPhone customers:
I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.
First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.
Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.
Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.
Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.
We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

The Office - Ratings
Premiering on Thursday, March 24, 2005, after an episode of The Apprentice on NBC, it caught the curiosity of 11.2 million viewers in the U.S., winning its time slot. However, NBC meant for the series to air on Tuesday nights and when it first aired on a Tuesday night, it lost nearly half its audience with only 5.9 million viewers. The program averaged 5.4 million viewers, ranking it #102 for the 2004–2005 U.S. television season. The first season finale received the lowest rating in the show's history, earning just a 2.2 rating with a 10 share.
As the second season started, the show slowly started gaining a cult following after the success of Carell's August 2005 movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin and the fortune of airing after the surprise rookie hit comedy, My Name Is Earl. Growing viewership seemed promising enough to NBC that they moved the series in January 2006 to the "Must See TV" Thursday night where the ratings continued to grow. Some of this growth may be attributed to the iTunes Store beginning to sell the show on its then-new sales of TV Shows, where The Office is regularly among the top shows. By the 2005–2006 season, it placed #67 (tied with 20/20). It averaged 8.0 million viewers with a 4.0/10 rating. It also was up 40% in viewers from the year before and up 60% in viewers ages 18–49.
The third-season premiere received a 5.7/9 and actually made a small increase in total viewers and viewers 18–49 over its lead-in program, My Name Is Earl. By the end of the 2006–2007 season, it placed #68 (tied with The Biggest Loser 3). It averaged 8.3 million viewers with a 4.1/11 rating, a slight improvement from the previous season.

Savant marries a touchscreen with iTunes; calls it "Apple Surface"
Look, we're all about innovation, and you know deep down we really want our computers to be big-ass tables, but Savant's press release touting "the first Apple-based coffee table surface product" just made us cringe. Savant's Rosie touchscreen home-automation products are already well-respected, so there's no need to try and grab any tailfeathers here -- in fact, we think the specs sort of sell themselves: you're looking at a 40-inch touchscreen that sports iTunes integration, access to photos and movies, home-automation through the Rosie system, and, yes, runs on an internally-mounted Mac of some sort. More important than that, however, is the one spec that Microsoft's Surface can't currently match: Savant is getting ready to sell these to consumers, and soon. See? No need to to get crazy with the hype, now was there? Now just set a price and tell us when these'll ship, and we'll be all set.

So. I thought about it, checked with Nextel. Some of the phones on our family plan have contracts expiring in October and November. So I'll be waiting until then to switch plans. To Verizon.
Yes, this insight into my consumer research efforts has been a roller coaster. But I found a good LG phone on Verizon, and a good plan I can share with my mom and aunt. My dad and uncle are staying with Nextel.
So, why did I decide against the iPhone? Well, the big things that I was concerned about were battery life (i'd like to be able to use all these features and not have to worry about my phone dying) and storage capacity (8GB is fine for my music and podcasts, but what about videos?). The monthly service is also a little out of my comfort zone. When my Verizon contract expires in two years maybe the playing field will look a little different. That said, I'm going to grab an iPod Touch (16GB) in the mean time to take advantage of the wifi.
Thanks for being a part of this consumer research adventure!

The only thing that was keeping me off Verizon was the temptation of the iPhone and the lackluster reviews for their Chocolate and RAZR phones. Horror stories of shoddy wheels, unresponsive buttons, poor call quality. And I was just in denial about the service coverage. No poor reviews from any of my friends in the area. Not one. Coverage is primary. Or it should be. The next step is finding a really solid phone.

Didn't think I was old till everyone today told me I was old. I don't feel old. Ok, maybe a little fatigued and my back is acting up but a little ben-gay and I'll be golden. Am I right?

MTv has opened a flash casino (http://www.mtv.com/asm/addicting_games/) to allow people to "win" multiple voted in games like blackjack. The best part of this flawed voting system? You can play as many times as you want. I'm sitting at a good 5000 votes for Amy Winehouse at the moment.

You know, the year this song actually came out, I hated it. I find, though, that nostalgia is so painfully potent that I have come to cherish it nonetheless because of college reminiscence. May God have mercy on my soul.

Ain't life a *****?
That seems to always be like luck with woman. The minute I like a girl, she tells me she's dating someone else, then I move on. The minute I start a new relationship that old girl breaks up with her guy and proceeds to tell me she's always liked me.
It actually led me to take a few years off of the whole dating scene.

NO! It is simple. Ask her out before she goes. If nothing else you two might have a wonderful night together. At best, the door for something more may be left a open.
The situation doesn't matter, bro. You got to stop being so damn passive. People don't bump into each other in the subway and get married the next day. Ask these girls out, moping just won't do it.

Is this the girl you liked before? The one you took pics with? Anywho, just ask to hang out with her. What have you got to lose? Hang out with her before she leaves.. People sometimes cringe with the work date and anything of the sort.

Woodstock is a boy, Fred.
This is indeed the girl from before, the girl from the pictures, the girl from that thread a while back where I asked for book suggestions. I did have a crush on the girl at work, but I realized the other day that I liked her because she reminded me of the other girl. This girl at work is cool and I'm still glad I have someone to talk comics with (she's reading my copy of The Hood right now), but this other girl is really special to me. I'd only given up because she was in a long-standing relationship. Today I learned that that changed.
I called her. We talked a bit. It felt like the timing was right. I told her how I felt. She was glad I did. She said if I'd asked her out she would have said yes. The next time she's in town (soon) we're making plans.
So, there ya go.

On a note that has nothing to do with anything at all, I just bought myslef a 500gb external hard drive. And it's making this really high pitched, but very quiet, ringing noise. I can't tell if it actually is, or if I'm just going crazy. But either way, it's not really a good enough reason to return it, but I'm slowly losing my sanity.

Possibly because of the name of the character involved, I am reminded of a quote from Creed:
"I'm not offended by homosexuality. In the sixties, I made love to many, many women. Often outdoors, in the mud and the rain, and it's possible a man slipped in. Would be no way of knowing. "

Try this. Turn it off. Leave the room. Get a shower, go out for a bit, do whatever, but put your head in different situations and environments separate from the room. Come back to the room. Do you still hear it? Turn it back on. Is it any different?
On a related note, I too need a new external Hard drive for my macbook. Who knew individual porn files came in Gigabytes. ;)

Gah. As soon as I post this I'm packing up my computer and sending it out to have XP reinstalled and the stuff from my old harddrive transferred over. Not to mention a full-on virus scan. I tried getting onto google and it wouldn't let me. Told me something about how my computer appeared to have some sort of virus, and they wanted to remain uninfected. If google thinks my computer is a threat, something is wrong. Anyways, I won't be around until late Wednesday, or sometime Thursday, minus a few sporadic attempts at keeping up from school. Yeah. That's about it. I'm sure no one cares, it's only three days, but I figured I'd mention it. Wish me luck. God I hope this thing starts running faster.
