I don’t think too many people in the Geekdrome community really get into Hip-Hop, aside from JLo’s early day intros (R.I.P). That said, I am not sure anyone here will care, but I really do, and figured I would want to see what everybody else thinks.

Where as most of you anticipate new movies or comics. I really get hyped for new music. Music is my first love. Movies are an extremely close second, but music really inspires me. My music library currently has around 14,000 songs, most of which are Hip-Hop.

Which brings me to the hip-hop story of the year: Jay Z is coming out of retirement: http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1534551_4_0_,00.html The story is a little old but tracks are just being leaked to the internet. I should also note that Jay-Z is my favorite rapper. Two tracks are leaked so far. The track that members of the drome might be interested in “Kingdome Come” refers to Superman, MC hammer, and later Bruce Wayne. I listened to the track five times in a row, sitting in aww afterwards.

‘’Take off the blazer/Loosen up the tie/Step inside the booth/Superman is alive!'’

So what do you think of the Jay Z record? Do you care? What about Hip-Hop in general?

I pretty much feel the same way about music you do. People at my school have said they heard the new Jay-Z single already, and I feel like a dork cos I havent yet. I just hope it's good, Jay might've gotten "rusty" during his "retirement".

Since we're speaking of Jay-Z and he kinda has to do with the whole Gray Album (the beatles white album, and his black album) mash-up.

Have you heard "Blue Eyes meets Bedstuy"? It's a Frank Sinatra and B.I.G. mash-up. It's f*ckin' ill.

I haven't. I will check it out.

The two tracks that are leaked are: "Show Me What You got" and "Kingdome Come" There was a radio leak of "Kingdome Come" a few days ago, but yesterday a good quality version leaked. Also you can find places that stream "Show Me What You Got" (MTV, Rocafella, etc) because it is the single.

Oh man, I though I'd never see a hip-hop thread on these forums. I listen to mainly Rap/Hip Hop. The new Jay-Z is OK, nothing spectacular, but who knows, maybe it will grow on me. As of now I am looking forward to the new Game album "The Doctor's Advocate" and I keep listening to Ludacris' "Release Therapy" over and over.

A thread specific to hip hop is exclusionary and doesn't really speak to the geekdrome lifestyle, perhaps this belongs more in the General discussion forum.

The Game's album will be another classic. There are a few tracks that leaked from there as well as a freestyle he recently did. I'm just glad I don't have to listen to another Game mixtape, although they really were entertaining.

I've used Mixtapetorrent before. Please remember not to post any links to specific torrents. They were saying that Def Jam was getting the FBI involved with the whole "leak" of the first single but Monday, BET is premiering the Music Video for the single. Yeah, it was a "leak" alright.

Couldn't you say the same for talking about a specific show rather than all shows on NBC? In any case, I've seen threads in here pertaining to music with no problems cited. Let's guage the response and if anything we can move it :)

The Game destroyed G-Unit long ago with 120, 240, 360, 300 Bars, You Know what it is Vol3. Ghost Unit, Stop Snitching and BlackWallstreet Journal Vol.1. Doctor's Av will be hot, the new single, Strip Club sounds great, though I wish he's stop with the whole Dre thing, he's trying to piggyback on the DOC too much.

good point, so here's a banging hip-hop track that's just about comic books to qualify this thread:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ifyixk

with lines like this:

I stalk men like Watchmen
A godson like Robin
And get made 'spect like Charles X was just talk'n

and i think the bigest hh ablumn this year was The Torture Papers by AOTP, and the most anticapted for next year will be the new Cannibal Ox LP. Not too hyped about Jay's come back, but the Game's new stuff is sweet.

This forum relates to Geekdrome because of, but not limted to, the following reasons:

Music is something everyone geeks out on
Jay-Z (and many others) reference geek culture
Geekdrome fans are fans of Hip-Hop
JLo raps

Most importantly, this thread was started so that Geekdrome fans can discuss Hip-Hop. If I wanted to hear what the NotMTV fans had to say, I would have posted there. Simply because other forums are on Revision 3, does not mean that we have to use them. Each show is its own and can discuss what they want in their forums. It is obvious, by the previous posts, that Geekdrome fans are interested in Hip-Hop and thus it is fair game for discussion. If no one wants to talk about it, the forum would have died, and I would click on over to NotMTV to see what they had to say. That, however, is not the case. Geekdrome fans are also fans of Hip-Hop. The only place at Revision 3 where you will get that is the Geekdrome forum.

no offense to all the people who like jay-z, but i find him to be the most overrated rapper. His rhymes arent dope and those that are, he "borrowed" from someone else. his flow isn't on par with any of the people that came before him. He is more of a brittney spears of the hip hop world than a real rapper.

Ditto, though the young Buck - 'I know you want me' isn't too bad.

Explain this to me though, you can have music threads, but not in stuff you don't like? So we can have videogame threads in here, but not anything in the FPS genre because you don't like 'em?

I was waiting for someone to bring up something decent. Saul Williams is awesome. Hip hop isn't something I'd consider myself an expert in, but I do know I can't be bothered by rappers who only talk about money, fancy things, banging chicks and various dance moves.

It seems anyone can make a hip hop single these days. It's almost like these artists/producers want to come up with the most ridiculous stuff because they know the general public will buy it regardless.

How about stuff like Kool Keith, Aceyalone, Hieroglyphics, Atmosphere and A Tribe Called Quest? Even stuff like Public Enemy, NWA, and Cypress Hill.

Jay-Z is amazing. He freestyles so much of his actual recorded flows and writes songs really quickly with great lyrics over a great beat. I love a rapper that doesn't just flow quarter notes over a beat, but adds in like they're speaking to you and makes THEIR flow COMPLEMENT the beat instead of following it. Common, Saul Williams, etc. Man, I saw a clip of Timberland showing Jay-Z some of his beats, and a guy that loves his own creations that much you've gotta love them too (99 problems i think is one of his...so ****ING good). Anyway, just lookin out for my boy Jay-Z. Peace.

Yeah, I agree with everything you said there. The "Money, Cash, Hoes" phase that Hip-Hop is going through is horrible. And you're right about anyone being able to make a Hip-Hop single, isn't there a song called "Chicken Noodle Soup" or some shit like that? What the f*ck happened here?

I always get into discussions about how Hip-Hop is dead because of the recent trends going on. There's this rap duo I listen to named Blue Scholars who put it the best. "I heard some heads say that hip-hop is dead, it's not, it's just malnourished and underfed".

I tend to listen to rappers that are more political, and more positive. I've been listening to lots of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Blackstar, and Dead Prez for the longest time.

And if you're into really political rap shit, you should listen to Blue Scholars. The MC, Geo, is probably on the top lyrically if you listen to him.

I another thread I said I listen to Ratatat, try to look for the Ratatat Mixtape Vol. 1. It's kinda rare, and I don't have all the songs. But the remixes are f*ckin' tight. If there's anyone who want's to have a listen just PM me and we can figure out way for me to send it to you.

K-os is a canadian hip-hop artist. I think the only thing oldschool about him is that he is very anti-gangsta rap and falls very much into the conciousness movement of hip-hop. He has some old styling for sure but really he just started getting a lot of attention.

I certainly like the Idea of the of a hip hop thread. I didn't really feel comfortable with the other myusic thread since it was all rock and heavy metal.

As for the Jay Z album I hate it. Not because of jay Z but because naz signed to the label that owns rockafella and he is continually burrying the album in order to release his own. I know him and Naz had beef between the two of them but that is not the way to settle it.

Lyrics for 77%

(Cheers) Well I'm left sitting here staring into a beer
shaking my head at the same ol' loathing and fear
Stranger in my own land, can't understand
How the very word Australian has been damned
I ****ing hate myself, take 'Aussie' from my name
Erase this endless shame, forever casting blame
If you don't act the same will I destroy you?
Everyone looks the same beaten, black and blue
So I've had enough of these redneck pricks
When fact is the only ****in shit that sticks
Watch as I tear the very skin from my face
So none'll see my race, my deep disgrace
Your not even from here in the first place!
And those that are you wanna further debase
Nup, no more, never again whether by fist or pen
I will defend, cause I'm at a loose end
The shattered remnants of Aussie dignity
I'm a skip, whitey, round-eye suprise me
By using your shrivelled brain to please explain
How the clever country just went down the drain
We rode the sheep's back now the sheep ride you
If this is how its gonna be don't call me 'true blue'
I denounce my ancestors, wounds still fester
If you say 'it aint so' I suggest ya' wake up

[Chorus]
It's time for you to
Wake up - this country needs a ****ing shake up
Wake up - these ****s need a shake up (x4)

Talkback squawking hacks won't relax
Until Jones'y, Zemanek and Laws are all axed
77 percent of aussies are racist
And if you're here, I'll say it your faces
Rich redneck pricks still hold all the aces
So I'll buy ya a beer, with an arsenic chaser
Better off dead? is that what I've said?
Tempting to take for all the blood you've shed
No doubt your as bad as your dads and ya mums
Mainsteam media making me so ****ing glum
Just anglo reality, intellectual cavities
Channel 9 fostering prejudiced mentalities
I won't be a casualty, just mention casually
That I can't stand for you shit-eating bullies
Preying on peeps without a mainstream voice
Most of you stay silent but I've got no choice

[Chorus]

Well I've yelled my lungs out but to no avail
Well I've yelled my lungs out but to no avail
Well I've yelled my lungs out but to no fukin' avail
That you're a stranger yourself now thats the sting in the tail
Captain Cook was the very first queue jumper
It was immigrant labour that made Australia plumper
Enough is enough, whiteys go pack your stuff
Don't wanna live in England? That's ****ing tough
I'm sick and tired of this redneck wonderland
Most've you stay silent and I can't understand
I just can't understand (understand)

[Chorus]

I agree that "Kick, Push" was overplayed (and the new single "I Gotcha" is pretty bad), but his style and storytelling is a refreshing departure from what you hear in today's pop-rap.

And about skaters getting pissed off about "Kick, Push," I felt the same way when I first heard it (even though I haven't picked up a skateboard in years), but when I realized that it was more a love song than a bullshit wannabe skater anthem, I appreciated it a lot more.

The reason it pissed me off as a skater is cos everytime I rode by, people that were outside would say, "Kick, push and coast" then huge laughter would erupt. I already had to deal with how overplayed it was, then I had to deal college frat boys quoting it.

Looking back on it though, I think "Kick, push and coast" is much better than to hear them talking to each other using horrible Dane Cook jokes.

Me too. Rap is what i mostly listen too (aside from Alt Metal), and I'm also not a fan of Jay-Z at all.
if you want some good rap, Dre's 2001 is still #1!

(and he mentions Jean Claude Van Damme--you can't get more Geekdrome than that)

If you Like 2001 then you like Jay Z since he wrote a lot of Dre's lyrics

I listen to all hiphop, from old school to horrorcore it all has a place. Rap as a whole hasnt changed Chicken Noodle Soup is no different then say Rapper Delite , There is actually a lot more to choose from now, its like that short period between 88 and 91 when you had your gangstas, b boys, political types, r&b rappers, and hippies. HipHop is at the stage where rock was like 15 or so years ago. There is a growing Indie scene and the music on the radio is for the kids not those who where into it 10 years ago. Hell i can stand all that fake ass emo rock thats out now just as much as i cant stand grilled out snap music that is hot now (D4L).

I play this stuff all day i just wish that urban radio could play more kinds of hiphop like rock or pop radio can.

i was talking about his rapping', since everyone is talking about his album, so i what i should have said was, i think he sucks as a rapper. and i too think horrorcore is great.
