I was wondering when this would happen after the success of transformers
(I've added a cast picture below if I were able to pick the actors)

They should adapt the original Macross instead.

Like most uber fanboy's i will blindly expect it to be the best movie ever and preorder my tickets.
But since spending many $$$ on merchandising and DVD's whats one more to add to the collection (assuming its not HD-DVD or Blu-Ray).

Good cast except jada pinkett-smith. She sucks the black hole's soul. Steve Zahn is a god. Lives on a farm in northern new jersey.

Yeah, he's from across the river (Minnesota) and that guy is good in everything he's been in, even the bad ones that I've seen clips of. Not sure how'd he be as lead, because he adds so much flavor as a supporting character...but I'm partial to the supporting roles...why I'm anxious to see Rescue Dawn. He's just a joy to watch and cheer for. The kinda supporting guy you want because he can crack a wise ass joke with as much ease as firing an AK-47, and he does them both so well you believe it.

happy texas, safe men, suburbia, that thing you do, saving silverman, speak, employee of the month, out of sight, etc.... he's pretty damn good in everything. I saw You've Got Mail, Daddy Day Care and Joyride because Steve Zahn was in them. I haven't seen Sahara yet but will watch becaue of him.
Daddy Day Care was ok, but when awkward, nerdy, Klingon-speaking steve zahn's character told that girl "I'm your daddy, I mean I want to be your daddy, I mean, . . hello". I peed and cried and split my sides.

I'm interested but I'm going to save my excitement for when it's in production and we know more about it. I think this could be good though. It's been awhile since I've personally visited the Robotech universe and I remember it being very enthralling at the time.

In related news, whats going on with the Evangelion live action? Last I heard they had raised $70 mil(half of the budget).
Robotech is definitely the more mainstream accessible of the two.

I actually expect this movie to be better than the series. Since I thought the series was awful.(thought it rocked when I was little, bought the DVDs a couple years ago and was all "oh man, this is just terrible. How many times is she gonna sing that song?!")

I am not a huge Robotech fan, I do enjoy it, but i'm not all crazy fannish about it. I am not really sure how I feel about this, Toby McGuire producing and acting in this. Hopefully it turns out to be good.

I own like 20 versions of Robotech/Macross it seems. The Japanese version severely pwns the American dub. This was the first cartoon that I remember that had a long story arc, character development and character death. Of course there's many cartoons and anime that have this now, but in the days of He-Man and other 30 minute toys commercials, it was amazing.
On the topic of the movie. Seeing the valkyries in live action will blow me away. Although I don't like Toby McGuire at all. I hope it turns out well.

I gotta say about ol' Toby...I've really only seen him in Spiderman movies.
I liked him alot at first, but as the franchise goes on, he's starting to irk me.
The face he makes when his character cries? It's pretty brutal to look at. I swear corners of his mouth touch his ears.

I'm going to have to agree, seeing a live-action (or very well done CG) version of a Valkyrie will probably cause me to shit myself in bliss.
The true question though... is why he didn't go for the gold and just do a remake of Macross Zero.

While Maguire would have been great for Rick Hunter back in the 90's, isn't he a bit old for the character now?

While I would love to see Robotech adapted to the big screen it is such a large story (it is Robotech , not Macross so it incorporates three generations of story. 4 if you count the Sentinels stuff) that the potential for train wreck is high.
I don't necessarily think that Toby is too old for Rick however, I just hope he was a fan of the series and not just jumping in on the "hot thing". Giant transforming robots.
Honestly the potential for this never to see the light of day is pretty high.
Just one man's opinion.

Cartoons were cool, but like most books vs movies, book > adaptation

I think its probably a bad idea for americans to try and make movies of japanese cartoons.
Just on principle!

Totally agree that Toby Maquire would be a mistake due to the fact that he has openly demolished a comic icon. I don't know what I would do if the destroyed Rick Hunter too.
Second: You think they writer will go for the Robotech lore as seen in the Jack McKinney novels or T.V. Series?

Robotech is the butchery of three Japanese animes that had nothing to do with each other.... That said... I love Robotech :p One of the first shows I watched where they didn't care about killing off many characters one after the other and sometimes in groups.

Actually, the translation and editing was very meticulous to tone down the nudity, adult themes, obscene language and gratuitous violence. They even added extra narration in order to make some of the more subtle plot lines accessible to younger children.

I think im offically over the remakes. Good or not its nothing more then people cashing in on our childhood and not bringing anything new to the table. I dont like that.
I hope its good though, im not saying i dont want a good robotech movie or voltron or thundercats, but its just... i dont know, weak or something for everyone ot jump on the band wagon.
Kinda like ... hey we all think you nerds are dweeds and all, but thnx while we rape your childhood and cash it and make money off you.
Ya know? It just feels weird.

Well, I don't. However, in the early eighties when Robotech was being constructed, the target audience was quite a bit younger than the Macross audience. American programmer's didn't believe in programming cartoons for adults. I mean, there was the Flintstones and that was about it. To make Robotech a bankable product to TV stations required the adult themes to be dulled down a bit.
I was just watching a Macross scene. Claudia visited Roy in his quarters and commented an explicit wall hanging showing full frontal nudity. Roy grabed Claudia in an an ambiguously sexual overture. The seen faded out... This scene, of course, was not included in Robotech because the target audience probably would have never parsed it.
