Diggnation guys,
Love u and your show. Keep it up.
However, the reason for 16GB flash Touch and not a HD based 80GB or 160GB is BATTERY BATTERY BATTERY.
Think about it. With that screen and the Mac OS, a large HD based Touch wouldn't last long.
Again,
BATTERY BATTERY BATTERY

I wondered why Stevie didn't released a HDD based model.
I just thought it was clever marketing ... hold back a larger capacity HDD model until after the Apple Acolytes go forth an buy up as many as they can in the stores, THEN leak an announcement that a HDD based model will be coming in January.
As a new Apple share holder (thanks for dropping the price Steve - the market reacted, and AAPL share prices dropped $15 in 2 days, so I bought some), moves like this are welcome to me. Products flying off the shelves is good for shareholder nerves ... and announcements like "the new iTablet, featuring a multitouch screen, and 160GB solid state HDD" or the new "iPod touch+ with an 80GB microHDD" or the new "iPhone 2.0 Euro edition" just make me very, very happy.
So Steve, don't pander to the fanbois. Hold something back ... give them a surprise. It works well for the stock price.

highly doubt that is the real reason for Apple's decision. Not saying it is a bad reason, just saying I don't think it is a big enough reason, unless for some reason going flash is going to save a ton of power over a hdd, which in most cases it'll be noticable, but nothing substantial. i.e. They might be gaining 1-2 hours, not like 6-7 hours.

I just got my 30gig ipod so i dunno im fine on Ipods until the 160 or whatever touch does come out o_OI knew a new model was coming out, but I still bought an 80GB iPod last June. I suspected the new model would be a touch type device, and that there would be price drops - but in consumer electronics, that is always going to happen - new models, price drops.
Steve ... can I please have a $100 rebate because you dropped the price of the iPod as well? What? No??? You asshole.

I don't think it was battery life. The hard drive based ipod classic still has amazing battery life, from what I remember of the keynote.
I think that it is a serious mistep to not make the ipod touch the flagship model, and to not give it a hard drive. Right now consumers have 5 different options to choose from when they decide to buy an ipod. FIVE!!!!!. There is the iphone, the shuffle, the nano, the classic, and the touch. The average consumer is going to stare dumbfounded at the rack of apple devices.....and I think that will scare many away.

iPhone - current flagship device ... has great appeal, but is not for everyone.
iPod touch - might not be flagship ... but is definately the premier iPod at the moment. Limiting factor is the storage - especially for video, BUT a video only takes up 700Mb, so its still got capacity for people that dont mind swapping out content regularly.
iPod Classic - for people that like large storage. Thats me. I went to the 80GB 5.5G iPod to replace an 8GB Nano. I now have pretty much my entire music library with me ... in the car ... playing through my Alpine HU that controls the iPod. As a disc changer it cant be beat.
iPod nano - to me, this was the odd announcement. nanos appeal was its size. The number of people I saw exercising with them, or slipping them into a pocket while travelling is amazing. I am not sure how the new FAT format is going to work out, and if the appeal will fade for this model.
iPod Shuffle - I never understood this one, but I can definately see an appeal for people that just want to set a playlist, and go for it - on the run to work, exercising etc. Small and unobstrusive, I can see this one staying for a long time.
This years line up is definately a transitional product line. Not enough room for all those products, but just like car companies put new sheet metal on old models to give them a fresh boost until the new replacement model comes out, I think Apple are doing the same with the iPod Classic and Nano. I expect a crossover device to come along next year to replace both of these. Something similar in size to the fat nano, with a capacity of 32 or 64GB. The large HDD iPod classics will disappear, and be replaced by a new flagship model in Jan of a iPod touch with an HDD.

I think im giong to get one... I got a zune right now with 6 gigs free. But I could work with 16GB no prob. Id probably sell it on ebay, I got the Zune AV Pack with the AV Cable and the Dock and an extra Sync cable with a wall charger and a remote control. But im not sure if it would sell for enough money for me to get an iPod Touch, But id probably do it for the web browsing ... LOVE THAT SHIT

Hell yeah, I have one too, and I recommended it to a friend of mine, she loves hers too... I have one of the older models though with the endless scrolling...

I have taken to unplugging the iPod, locating the file (especially for podcasts), getting it playing ... and plugging it back in. Alpine are supposed to be able to update the HU firmware to accomodate changes. I'd like - better searching, and support for AAC skipping for navigating podcasts :)

I don't listen to podcasts in my car, however I do have multiple names that start off the same like, artist x, and artist x with y, and artist x with z, but the screen can only show artist x for all three (I'd use a real example except I can't think of the specific artist right now). So if I go to one of them I'll at times take the ipod out and navigate to it like you said.
Have you seen the newer models? You can hit the 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 buttons to skip down the list to certain points (1/5, 2/5, etc.)

I like my in dash stereo too much too rip it out and put in a new one, no matter the functionality. Plus, aftermarket stereos are usually made with bright colors, both in their casing and in their displays, and they just look cheap and unnatural, no matter how expensive they really are.

My OEM stereo died. I could listen to anything provided it was NPR (the station is was on when the buttons crapped out) and I didn't want to listen to a CD (because the button to swap between radio and CD stopped as well).
Alpine HUs aren't aren't as tacky as many others (a reason why they are used in BMWs) ... so it was a good call. I even waited 6 weeks until the new models with direct iPod cable connect (no external box) was released.
Been VERY happy.

I agree, it doesn't look tacky at all. There are no bright colors and it actually looks better than my original.

I really want an iPod Touch but 16 gigs just isn't enough. Then again, iTunes does a good job at adding/removing unwatched content. Tough one...

I've really thought about selling my Zune for one but I agree 16gb isn't enough my current music collection is like 20+gbs would have to be a 30-60gb before I would though probably. But a laptop comes first followed by an SLR.

I want a 16gig touch for my most important stuff and I'll keep my ipod video (replace it with the classic when it dies) for my entire collection. I'll then keep my ipod video in my car and use my touch for portability.

If there were 30-60gb options I would buy one. I'm just going to wait for the storage to increase some more as well as the price to drop a bit.

That's what I though, however I noticed that I only have a 15GB 3G one now, so its actually a storage bump, I don't have video know, but I don't have a ton of music, so it will be mostly video, and that really should be enough.

I'm waiting for Skype to release a web based "iPhone/iPod" friendly version of Skype. Free VOIP calls on the iPhone! Then it's only a matter of time until a third party develops a mic accessory for the iPod Touch so it to can do VOIP.
I'm sure Apple will eventually add such functionality themselves when they make iChat available on the iPhone with VOIP support.

I'm excited to see what Microsoft does with the new zune 2.0....supposedly, it is coming out sometime soon. I hope its an improvement on the current model (even though I love mine) and I hope they release a firmware update for the old ones at the same time.
