i was stoked when i heard that they are filming episodes in HD now but then when i went to check it out i found that they are only doing HD in Quicktime format. I use TvTonic in Vista Media Center to watch my vidcasts and tvTonic doesnt support quicktime videos.

so i am stuck with the SD version. Can you guys release the HD version in WMV format too please?

I was thinking of that too. An WMV would be better for XBOX 360 sharing.

However. The WMV HD Mp4 isn't quite as good as h.264. Downloading an extra 100MB might not mean a lot to you, but it could really hurt after a few hundred thousand downloads.

They should end up with multiple HD downloads not just Quicktime

Andre here, from TVTonic. The good news is that we actually have a release coming VERY soon (TVTonic 3.2.3) that allows for native QuickTime playback in Vista Media Center. This means you can subscribe to the current QuickTime HD feed in Vista Media Center.

We just built our second release candidate last night, and if all goes well it will be out early next week after it passes QA.

The downsides are as follows:

1) The QuickTime files don't extend to the 360 (WMV only)
2) You need a high-end computer to handle the overhead of running high-def QuickTime through our filter.

Last I checked, the "large" WMV feed was only 320x180 @ 400k. Perhaps we can persuade Rev3 into increasing the large to 640x360 or maybe even 960x540? You can get a pretty good increase in visual quality by increasing the resolution, even if you keep the bitrate relatively low.

Anyhow, glad to hear you're watching content via TVTonic. If you have any suggestions or comments about the platform, feel free to email me at andre _a-t_ tvtonic _d-0-t_ com.

- Andre

PS You can subscribe and watch the current QuickTime HD feed if you add the RSS as a custom channel and watch in TVTonic Classic. Access "classic" by browsing the Online Media ribbon in Vista, and finding the TVTonic button under the TV+Movies sub-category. You will be prompted with an option to try TVTonic Classic.

The current large wmv is 640x360 @ 800k (with peaks at 1200k). The small wmv is indeed 320x180 @400k

man i was really hoping that kevin and alex were going to release a WMV HD version by now - guess kevin is too much of an apple fanboy to do that. damn that annoys me. i will still subscribe but it woudl be so much nicer in HD.

BTW - a week or 2 ago, tvtonic released a new version that was supposed to be compatible with quicktime but it didnt work. so i guess i am out of luck.

Oh Jesus Christ. When will people learn that Kevin Rose has nothing to do with what happens on the site? I really don't think it's in Revision3's best interest to offer every format they have in HD.

first - no need o get all worked up - it was an innocent comment. second - i respectfully disagree - i think they really need to offer quicktime and WMV in hd - they are alienating many windows users by offering HD in only quicktime format.

Don't forget us Linux users who have to deal with both your formats.

Linux runs VLC, so that is a moot argument.

So do Windows and Mac. What's your point? If you guys are going to argue about native formats for your OS then we should too, regardless that they all run VLC. Theora sucks ATM (probably for a long time) and I can't think of another open standard ATM.

Also, as for streaming, you can transcode (on the fly) using VLC but I'm not sure how that would help getting it to your 360.
