Sir can I start a thread about non American movies Sir?

Most movies I see is either American or Swedish and I always suspect that that is a bunch of movies out there that I'm missing. So do you fine guys and gals have any recommendations except Run Lola Run and Amelie?

I, as a Swede, recommend you to Netflix Lukas Moodysson's Show Me Love, Lilya 4-Ever, and Mikael Hafstrom's Evil.

Yes it was, but its called Thriller - a cruel movie, over here and noone knows about it. The only reason I know about it is Kill Bill.

I used to watch Samurai Saturdays on IFC and a series of Japanese movies Called Samurai I & II and so and so forth were actually really good. I liked it how each movie was step by step on this guy's rise to power. Its defiently worth checking out.

****ing amazing. Torture flick, most disturbing movie of all time. It's italian. 1975. Italian, artsy, old, so of course, = anti-fascism. ****ing awesome.

If you thought the Trailer to Pan's Labyrinth was interesting, check out Guillermo Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del diablo, if you like having the origin language's title). I was actually pretty damned surprised how much I liked this movie.

I was going to suggest that and "Run Lola, Run" but I figured everyone knew about them already. So I'll just add my seconded opinion.

Then you should see Dellicatessen, it's a much better movie with almost the same cast and set somewhat in the same world.

Well, technically all big Hollywood movies are foreign to me. But let's talk movies where people do not speaka tha engliash.

My first one is a Danish movie, I'm from Denmark, I watch movies from here.

It's called "Blinkende Lygter" in Danish, and "Flickering Lights" in English.

This is one of the, if not THE, best Danish movie out there. The acting and cast is incredible, and it's writing is funny as hell.

However, I've heard that the English subtitles are horrible... so that's too bad.
Anyways, I think this is a must for movie buffs.

"Mad Max". Hollywood overdubbed the original soundtrack with American actors so that the public would understand the film ... so I guess this makes it an foreign language film as well :)

BUT ... the ultimate foreign language film straight out of Bollywood ... Mr India (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093578/). AWESOME movie - who doesn't love a movie where the hero is left a magic ring of invisibility from his dying father, an evil dude out for world domination, and scripted dance numbers with casts of thousands on beaches between the fight sequences??

I really enjoy the Kirasawa classic "Seven Samuri."

I also recommend "Shaolin' Soccer."

For the kids (of kid in you), you can start renting any animation feature by Miyasaki. These films are great. Most are available in quality English dubbing or the original Japanese. These films are rich, beautiful and appeal to multiple levels. They make Walt Disney look like Tromo.

The Devil's Backbone by Guillermo Del Toro. If you're only seen Blade 2 and Hellboy and aren't sure if you'll like Pan's Labyrinth, check this out to see what a talented director he really is.

I preffer Shaolin Soccer to Kung Fu Hustle :)

Anything Jean Pierre Juenet does is gold! I even liked Alien 4 and Very long engagement. Amelie is my fave film of all time though.

The Original 3 french Taxi Movies are great fun

Crimson River with Jean Reno is cool

Good Bye Lenin is a great german flick and I liked the German flick the Edukators, and Run Lola Run.

The Only Hungarian movie I would recomend to non Hungarians is Kontroll. It's about ticket inspectors, but it's so dark and weird. Very nicely shot.

Although technically english, Trainspotting was cool. Such thick accents deserve foreign label.

I also liked that roberto bengigni film called Life's Beatiful.

As a kid I used to watch a lot of Terance Hill movies. The danish guy must know them, maybe. He's italian, but he was famous europe wide.

My last visit to france I doscovered louis de fines. The film 'Le soup de seaux' I would translate it to Cabbage soup is about these two old dudes who suring a farting contest contact aliens and befriend them with Cabbage soup and the Aliens grant them wishes.

As asian cinema goes I like Hong Kong action comedy movies. And although slow Korean Movies are looking heaps good, and Battle royale is probably my fave Japanese movie :)

There's my list! Yours?

WINGS OF DESIRE

A metaphor for the re-unification of East and West Germany, this is a total art flick, but it's fucking awesome. Hollywood of course took the story, ripped out it's heart and anything cool about it and then made City of Angels. The original had the guy who played Columbo Peter Falk playing himself, and Nick Cave playing himself.

Pan's Labyrinth was really good, I liked NightWatch but NightWatch 2 was disappointing.

I'm very hot and cold about Myazaki films. I think Castle of Cogliostro is the best anime ever made (not technically, I'll give that to Akira), and I really loved spirited away. I thought howls moving castle was rubbish though. I also didn't much care for princess Mononoke. I liked My neighbour Totoro, and the forever girly film Kiki's delivery service.

Funny how I don't think of Anime as foreign. Probably because I watch cartoons dubbed.

GOJIRA
Oh no! They say he's got to go. But seriously, it's actually a metaphor for the nuclear arms race, and the original Japanese version is pretty good when you consider how Godzilla is considered to be such a joke by most of us westerners. And personally, I think the special effects for the monster are much easier to watch now than the old stop motion for King Kong. And it's just a much darker film than I would've expected.

You should listen to Poltah. The danes have cranked out a lot of great movies in the last ten years that haven't got the international attention that they deserve.

Apart from Flickering lights i reccomend Pusher, In China they eat dogs, Nightwatch, The Celebration and The Green Butchers.

I don't really know many foreign films. All the one's I do know were already mentioned:

Old Boy
Shaolin Soccer
The Edukators
Goodbye Lenin
Night Watch
and
Ichi the Killer

Usually when I think about foreign media, I think about this British soap opera called East Enders my stepmom made me watch when I was 13.

You'll probably love it, I'm very much in the minority ;)

We consider British, and Aussie movies foreign now?

I really liked 'He died with a flafel in his hands'. Anybody that has been in share accomodation can relate :) It's an aussie film!

I also really like Two Hands, and Garage Days. Generally aussie films dissapoint me e.g. Illustrated family doctor, Bad eggs, Craic and the Extra, Especially the last two as I find Jimeon a very funny man with his stand up comedy. But boy are there some gems too!

Taits toi is a real funny french film with Gerard depardiou and Jean Reno, then again name me one film with Jean reno that isn't good! The French version of the visitors is really good.

La Haine, a french film from the 90s, which was very prescient for it's time. It focuses on the plight of poor, immigrant youth in the slums of France, and the racism and discrimination they face.

Seems pretty poignant considering what went down in France over the summer.

A very good movie.
