For anyone who's a die-hard Quake and a bit of a tech head you may be interested in Quake's 10th anniversary. John Romero has released the Quake Map Sources. If you're interested check here for the files and the link: http://rome.ro/2006/10/quake-map-sources-released.html#links

Didn't they already release Quake to the OSS community years ago? Did they not provide maps or something?

just the code, not the maps. I will never personally get sick of Quake, Doom maybe, but not Quake. Everyone involved shined so thoroughly Carmack was on his game, Romero was on his game, and Reznor was still rockin the house.

While Wolf3D and Doom were the epic games in my FPS history... Quake II was the ultimate. Of course, it wasn't the game, it was the engine and all the mods it enabled.

Still, cool news about the quake maps.

That's one thing I miss about the late 1990s. There are few or zero FPS games released these days that are as big of a deal as Doom II and Quake II were back then. Now there's a release to the completely fractured market every day and even huge releases like Unreal versions are nowhere nearly as insanely anticipated as before... and the hype certainly doesn't carry over long afterward.

Sure, people still play them for awhile. Maybe even years. But not as many. It's quickly "okay, this was fun.. time to move on to the next game".

Dude, totally. Oversaturation is what's KILLING First Person Shooters these days. Half-Life 2 was ****ing awesome, but it's hard to pay attention when you ALSO have FarCry, Serious Sam 2, Call of Duty 2, and any number of Halo clones. And I swear to god, if I see another WWII FPS, I'm gonna throw the developers in a German oven.

I enjoy having a large number of quality games to choose from. And I will continue to play WWII shooters as long as they are good.

The original Quake community is still pretty large, mostly because you can do so much with it. Considering Quake 3 was essentially a modded version of the same engine, it shows how great a game it was. WWII games are something else. Personally I still think the level design in Quake was amazing and it's rare that anyone has come close to doing as well. When Valve released their Classic maps that were simply Quake map ports I was hugely happy. The point of this post was to get the original maps out to a wider audience. Valve had to build their maps from scratch. Here people have an oppurtunity to simply take the map source and drop them in to the engine of their choice. It doesn't look like there are any mappers here, but maybe one day someone will come along and see this or any other link in to the maps and use them.
