View Full Version : natural alternatives to antidepressants?

So. I been on and off my puppy-uppers for a couple of years now. Pretty mild dose, but they helped immensly. Been off them for a month now due to an insurance snafu...
But wanna quit. Find a "natural" alternative that isn't quackery. I need something cause the "little things" that fugged me up when not on them are creeping back: procrastination, sleeping too much, drinking too much, poor diet, etc...
Anyone know about this stuff?

Drugs=Bad
This is that dare bullshit. Not all drugs are bad. Some people actually need drugs not to become axe murderers. If a doctor has prescribed these drugs, I don't think they could be bad.
However, it's tough spending your life addicted to anything...even if it is good for you.

I wouldn't go that far. Just that sometimes taking the drugs is better than not.
i don't know about depression but i do know herbs for anxiety
kava kava was used by shamanic hawaiian priests
and gives you epic dreams

That's my problem. I avoid taking care of important stuff by posting on Rev3, chat, pownce, etc. Those are my vid games, movies, etc. Distractions.
But I was good this weekend. conciously took care of stuff, bills, laundry, cleaning etc...
but that's the exception to the rule when off my meds.

If you're off them now after being on them a while, watch out for possible withdrawl symptoms. Some of the stuff can be ****ing nasty.
The thing with herbal remedies and what not is; the more you research, the less you have the placebo effect helping you out. In the end, it really is just about feeling reassured by popping something in your mouth to help.
I've used St. John's wort for a while - you can't use it while you're on any SSRIs, but it does just as much good without some of the shitty side effects. Taking it with something like ginseng to boost your energy can be good too.

In my head, I imagined you driving around angry and wanting to run over little kiddies, but instead, stopping and getting out and giving them all hugs.... that's worse and funny.

Serious answer time.
Many herbal teas have antidepressant qualities - some just because they relax you, which helps clear your head, and allows you to think straight ... some because they clear your head and allow you to sleep better.
BUT as a specific antidepressant, try one with St Johns Wart. You better tea emporium (OK, larger supermarkets and place like Whole Foods) will probably carry Yogi brand teas. They have a stack of them that are designed for different herbal enhancements.
Just remember - steep the tea in hot water, dont roll the herb into a blunt and smoke the stuff.

don't worry ~ he is wrong ~ some people do win by becoming enlightened ~self realized ~ achieving buddha mind ~ which is the true goal of life
read some carl jung ~ 'man and his symbols' is good
from the 'diamond sutra'
Then Buddha asked Subhuti, "What do you think, Subhuti, has the Buddha arrived at the highest, most fulfilled, most awakened and enlightened mind? Does the Buddha teach any teaching?"
Subhuti replied, "As far as I have understood the lord Buddha's teachings, there is no independently existing object of mind called the highest, most fulfilled, awakened or enlightened mind. Nor is there any independently existing teaching that the Buddha teaches. Why? Because the teachings that the Buddha has realized and spoken of cannot be conceived of as separate, independent things and therefore cannot be described. The truth in them is uncontainable and inexpressible. It neither is, nor is it not. What does this mean? What this means is that Buddhas and disciples are not enlightened by a set method of teachings, but by an internally intuitive process which is spontaneous and is part of their own inner nature."

No I am right you die you lose. No amount of enlightenment will help you with that. I've learned to look past the enlightened bullshit and see the truth people hide from.

Laugh a lot and often. Not kidding. Find people who can make you laugh no matter what. It's how I survived high school without dying, no matter how depressed I was.
And also, healthy eating helps, but if a symptom of your depression is not eating healthy, then that's kinda hard. :D

dedicated to ariastar
after math
when first i saw you
thought you looked so good
when first i met you
kinda raised my mood
now i'm glad and happy
that you are gone for good
here comes a new one
says i make his day
so says the new one
that he'd like to stay
think i'll save some heartache
and send him on his way
for sure will come some others
with starlight in their eyes
so sad for all the others
they'll find a gal too wise
though they make speak the truth

A comma, for instance, indicated a slight pause, which you will have when speaking. Writing/type does not have voice inflections that can make written communication confusing.

Taking your sentence as an example, and turning it from written language to spoken language written down you would get.
Like a comma <pause> indicates a slight pause <pause, sigh> which you will have when speaking. And like writing 'n typing doesn't have <start two finger bunny ears to indicate ">voice inflections <end two finger bunny ears to indicate "> that can make written communication confusing?

Recommend the Yogi St. Johns Wart tea ... BUT remember that half the benefit of drinking tea is the art of making tea. Use a teapot, use loose leaf tea - don't resort to dunking Liptons Tea Bags ina cup of hot water.
