Many people believe they truly know what a corporation is. But do they? The Latin root of the word corporation is corp, meaning body (i.e. corpse), but does that mean that corporation are filled with dead people? We could only hope. This thread is about corporations and much, much more: Our form of government, our rights as human beings, and even the rights of nature. We can only start a revolution one person at a time (yes, I know that sounds cheesy, but...yeah).

i had a friend who once said something i found incredibly profound

'corruption starts over a cup of coffee'

My Lords, a corporation is an abstraction. It has no mind of its own any more than it has a body of its own; its active and directing will must consequently be sought in the person of somebody who is really the directing mind and will of the corporation, the very ego and centre of the personality of the corporation." lord haldane 1915

the visionary/founder establishes the raison de etre of a company

of course financial gain is a goal but the motivation should be something else ~ adventure ~ innovation ~ service of an ideal

what else ?

What exactly are we "revolting" against? You said that the root of the word corporation meant body, a la corpse. However, It doesn't mean dead body. So yes, corporations are filled with many living breathing bodies doing work.

I'm confused by this thread.

*sigh*

it was started here (http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9639&page=4)

a corporation is also like a body in that it has various parts and systems that ideally would work optimally together for the benefit of the individuals and the group (john nash)

there are the ugly exploitative facets of corporations and there are the potentially positive contributory aspects of what a corporation could/should be

This thread started off kind of vague because there are so many issues about all of these topics. Just to repeat myself:

"Talking about corporations, check this out:

Democracy School (http://www.celdf.org/DemocracySchool/tabid/60/Default.aspx)

I went to this, and it blew me away. It covers some of the same topics as "the Corporation" but goes way more in depth (3 day workshop compared to a 60 minute movie). If you don't want to go pay $300 for some random class that was mentioned by some random person, then at least look for the book called Defying Corporations, Defining Democracy (a book of history and strategy) Edited by Dean Ritz. "

Also just google Democracy School and it will give you a load of stuff to look at concerning corporations. I'll look over my curriculum and get some great quotes and topics to focus this thread more, and that way other people don't feel ostracized by this intimidating info.

O, and I just had to add that part about corporations being full of dead people because I was trying to be funny. Guess it didn't come out that way.
