View Full Version : Anyone else find Dan annoying?

Ok, Annoying isn't the right word..

Does anyone else get somewhat perturbed when Dan tries to explain something - which he thinks is quite profound - but just ends up going around in circles?

Considering both Jeff and Alex laugh and carry on while this is happening it's well recognised that he does it, but why!?

I don't think he's not great for the show, but sometimes i think he's trying to be far too complex and doesn't have the skills to explain that profoundness to his friends, let alone the greater Audience.

Regardless - I'll keep watching and couldn't imagine someone else coming in to replace him (he definitely has a place in the show) but i just thought I'd vent somewhat, as sometimes I'm cringing or even wanting to hit him to get him to spit out what he wants to say when he keeps stumbling on his sentences.

hah - I'm not that disturbed - just find it hard sometimes to watch him :p

I also used the opportunity to test out my new keyboard - so forgive me if i was a little verbose - end of the day, he annoys me sometimes; and was wondering if it was just me :p

Nope, I find Dan oddly endearing and I suspect that his amusing inability to arrange cogent ideas into coherent speech is one of the main reasons I love him. Possibly one of the reasons the other two love him as well.

I think dan summed it up best when he was explaining why he didnt like alex on the screensavers at first.

" i didnt fully grasp your radness yet "

Look for the radness, its there in heaps.

i do know what you mean, and i wouldnt call it annoying. i think it's entirely awesome how emotionally commited and passionate he so obviously is about his work and/or craft. he really has a lot at stake when he talks, and (like me, and many others i know) i think he just gets far too caught up in how totally wicked important he thinks these things are... or something kinda.

Exactly...see, Alex, Dan, and Jeff all fill a specific role in the TRS. Alex is the experienced man about town, Jeff is the intelligent romantic, and Dan is the wide-eyed youngster who's yet to become a man...See, Dan has trouble expressing his thoughts because he's yet to experience something to compare it to.

It's like Alvin and the Chipmunks..

I often sound the same way when I am trying to explain something that has meaning to me.

I totally understand what he's talking about because what he says is exactly what I would have, lol.

I totally agree. I don't dislike Dan or his views in any way, shape, or form. It's just sometimes, he takes, like, forever to finish a sentence. It's like his mind is moving faster than his speech. He'll start a sentence, then he'll think of a better way to say it, start saying that instead, then think of something ELSE to say.

And he'll go on like that for like 10-15 seconds sometimes. It can be frustrating to listen to. Especially if you already know what it is he's trying to say.

Sometimes, I think he just needs to stop, think about what he wants to say, then say it. Instead of just plowing ahead.

Use your words Dan. USE YOUR WORDS!!

Though sometimes it's painful, I give Dan a lot of leniency. One, I'd be as bad or worse in his shoes. Two, Jeff and Alex are professional entertainers. They also have a natural talent for it. Not everyone does. And so Dan ends up being the odd man out in the group. That's nothing against Dan though, just a fact. One I'm sure he's acutely aware of. To criticize him about it seems pointless.

That dynamic, as awkward as it is, makes TRS what it is and I wouldn't want to see it change. I'm sure Dan could do better if they rehearsed, but would we want that version of TRS? Personally I say, "No."

I agree...I know that Dan feels frustrated when he can't express how he feels into words...I am the exact same way, and I can see it in Dan's face that he is soooo impassioned and ardent in what he is covering and at the same time he gets so wrapped up that he gets flabbergasted...I get the same way when I talk about History or Books or movies for that matter...I want people to understand how I felt more than what something is about.

That's a good point as well, they don't go off of cue cards or have a scipt typed up...It seems that all that they have are the topics that are going to be covered and then they individually draw together their own conclusions and thoughts without the other two knowing what the individual is going to say...There are many times when one or two of them are completely thrown by the feelings/thoughts of one of the other guys...That's what makes the show good...It's honest and sincere, no canned responses...Heck, Dan and Jeff even chose the same response(the Sims 2) on the e-mail question on the show this week, but they had completely takes on why they chose the answer...Ok I'm finished...

But honestly, how does the creation of this thread benefit this forum?

I'm all for free speech and I wholeheartedly love to see differing opinions here, but really why?

Let me say I've been a huge fan of Dan's from his first podcast until now. It's Dan-speak, eventually you understand the point he's trying to make. I find it endearing that Dan isn't this slick orator. He's a guy speaking on topics he loves, subjects we love, as if we were kicking it with him at his house. It makes the show feel real and not an overproduced vehicle to garner ratings. I don't agree.

So you've vented and what? You've taken time in all of your two posts, not to come up with a great geek-related topic that we all can share in, but to gripe. What movie do you love the most? Why? What is your most anticpated show for the new television season? What's your favorite sci-fi novel? This is a community, and what did we learn from you in your short time here? That Dan frustrates you? Sorry, that speaks more about you than it does about the quality of Danny's public speaking.

Me and a fellow member of this forum recently had a discussion about a few things we want to see in our geek forums. We agreed that we all must be a part of the solution to make this place grow. Not in constant lists with no substance certainly not a place to just to vent for venting sake. Or is it? If Dan or any other thing about TRS bugs you, I'm sure the guys would love your constructive criticism to be forwarded to them directly. I happen to know personally that they take time to read their e-mails and respond.

But do we need a whole thread about this? Can we talk about how the Iron Man trailer rocked? Can we talk about the greatest show in the history of television, sorry Jeff, for me it isn't The Shield, but I'd be happy to explain my favorite and why I love it so much.

Not to mention a few disgruntled posts will not change the line up. This is not co-host by vote. There were things about Alex (and Jeff) that I had to grow to love. Things about the whole show I had to grow to love. I sent my e-mails, let them know I hated the fist touch explosion and the intros (which I love now). I suggest you make your suggestions and if something bothers you that badly, keep it movin', as they say.

Now I've vented. Rant over.

Since Dan is a director obviously he's a very visual person and perhaps his vocabulary fails him on occasion. That's just something we all struggle with when we try to explain ourselves or something we enjoyed.

Maybe if he really gets stuck he can just cut to a video montage of how he feels

Annoying is the wrong word.
Dan just isnt as eloquent a speaker as Jeff, who is the best of the three, or to a lesser extent, Alex, as he would like to be.
You know how babies cry because they cant express themselves with words yet? Same thing, except Dan just talks in fragments.
But like other have said, it's an unrehearsed show, and sometimes thoughts just pop into your head while you're speaking, and that somehow dilutes what you're saying. I have the same damn problem!

I like the dynamic that the three of them bring, but I wouldn't mind if some of the "deep thoughts" and "existentialism" were dropped. We're talking movies, TV, and video games, and while I do believe that SOME movies, TV shows, and video games CAN BE deep. The great majority of them are not, and it seems to me that EVERY WEEK, Dan is trying to bring in all of these deep thoughts to the show.

Maybe there should be a little more use of the phrase: CUT.

Dan's roaming...CUT...GET TO THE POINT DAN...OK...ACTION!

Just my thoughts.

Love the show! Keep up the good work! When are we bringing back Ctrl-Alt-Chicken? I'm hungry!

Dan is actually pretty good at getting his point across IMO. A hell of a lot better than I would be in front of a camera. He's just kinda the odd one out because he isn't a freaking actor. Plus, his immense knowledge of movies makes up for the slight rambling.

*edit* I also think that the funniest moments in the show wouldn't have even occurred if it weren't for Dan's rambling, ex: "If your getting raped just.. jack off"

Dan doesn't just start talking hoping he has an idea. When a question is asked you can see the look on his face as he is developing an answer. He thinks. HARD!

I don't mind his halting, scattered comments. He has strong, passionate ideas that he is trying to convey in the perfect way possible. Often, we are along an a wiplash ride getting there, but his sincerity and enthusiasm make it enjoyable.

When he discusses technical details about direction and general production methods you should take special note.

Dan, keep doing what you're doing!

Hahaha some people are so defensive..

I don't mean it as a slight on him in any sense - and I do think that offers heaps to the show, and while some here have tried to label me as a troll etc for bringing up the topic, its obvious that it also 'stands out' to other people to.

I don't think its overly bad, and annoying was a very poor choice of words.
Like I said, he adds a dynamic to the show (which I do appreciate) but what I really meant to say was he looks uncomfortable when trying to say some of his more profound things, and in turn it makes me feel uncomfortable for him (sort of like when someone tells a joke in group setting, and the joke bombs and there's that awkward silence afterwards)..

No way did I want to make Dan feel bad or make anyone feel like they needed to defend him.

"trying to say some of his more profound things" fvkin HUH ? People don't TRY and say profound things.

Your head, your ass . .. as Tom Cruise said in top Gun and as did John Holmes' first on-screen partner, "PULL OUT!!!".

The irony is, now we all feel uncomfortable for you.

Defensive, yes. I really like Danny, he reminds me of my little brother, but instead of being a sports jock, he is actually into the stuff I love.

There's no need to feel uncomfortable, you wanted to express yourself and you did. However, I still find it ironic that you critique someone for not clearly translating their thoughts into words, yet you are now admitting a little of the same, no? Communication is a very complex tool.

Still, I stand behind my post. It was also meant to encourage you to participate in some of the fun, subject-related threads here. You obviously have a voice, use it so we can get to know you in a more productive way.

It's fun to watch him do exactly as you described: watching him squirm trying to put words together to describe his meaning, then Alex and/or Jeff put it together by using a short and simple phrase.
