Well since they are reviewing it, i thought we could review it and then see how our views differ and are the same.
To me, as someone that has been on console hiatus since the ps1 and n64, i thought this game was amazing. Personally as far as the animation on the faces it was stunning. There is times when you look at the characters and the facial squints and wrinkling of the nose and brow were done so perfect that i was just wow'd. Im not gonna, lie, the hair could have been done better, but everything else was smooth and done more realistically then any game i have seen to date.
The game its self i felt had a very compelling story. There was more then one time that i got chills as the story was told and the way the game was designed, which is a cinematic experience, it just brought me even more into it. The cut scenes you can invoke with combos certainly had a epic feel to them and even up to the end i was still excited as they were quick and cool, not deterring from the over pace of the moment. The characters in the game were very engaging to me. I absolutly loved Kai and the things that happened to her made me care even more cause of the twist that i wont reveal. The relationships between each other made me really wanna fight to save " my clansmen ", i really felt bad when shen was getting hit with those arrows, i think i even said something like " come on buddy " on that part is that is the main climax of his personal role in the game. The part with Kai.
The controls to me were perfect. The six axis worked very well and i was able to slip into it very quickly. I played warhawk and turned it off, but in this game it actually made it more fun once i figured out how to throw things and just got used to it. The combos and fighting system was a lot of fun too. Seems if you really needed you could button mash your way pretty far, so if your not skilled you can still play, but at least for me, there was a ceiling i hit where i was forced to learn some of the combos/ six axis and i couldnt just button mash, but it wasnt such a brick wall that it made the game too frustrating that i just gave up. It just made me learn, which looking back i like. Plus once you get into the combat system it really is just plain fun. Crotch stomping, flipping people up, getting thrown up in the air then shaking the control and grabbing people with your chains and stomping them out, you just have this feeling of epicness.
Other then that i cant relate enough how much the story moved me. Things going on in the world, the things that drive it, this game kinda expressed and i digg that. I dont wanna reveal anything, but this game had me finish to start as far as the story goes.
Now the one thing that everyone complains about is the length of the story. I have to admit i wish it went on longer, but actually the story couldnt have gone on longer so i am glad they ended it where it did instead of just putting filler in. I would rather have a shorter story that is more epic then a 20 hour game that just has meaningless tasks in it that just stretch it on. At least in this style game which is more like a interactive movie. Keep that in mind.
I personally am disapointed at the reviews the game got. I cant believe it was so low and how people react to it, but i thought about it and this is what i think. This game and Lair were meant to be AAA titles that would carry the PS3 on their backs. The bad taste we all have with the ps3 at the moment coupled with the utter failure Lair seemingly is ( havent played it so i reserve judgement ) put pressure on Heavenly Sword to be the foundation of the PS3 revival. I think too much was expected of this game so when it didnt deliver halo like hype from the game play, people were overly critical. I really think that being aware of that is critical to you really enjoying this game cause its so easy to be disheartned by what some people are saying. This is a fantasic game and you cant blame it cause it doesnt have the strength to justify the PS3 for not having any other games, you cant put the all the frustration that PS3 and Sony has cause from dropping the ball on its shoulders and expect it to make it all better. Play it for what it is, one game on a gaming system. Enjoy it for what its meant to be and if you still dont like it, then so be it. Just dont make it suffer for the mistakes of others cause you will be missing out on a really fun and engaging experience and personally one of the best games i have played on any next gen console yet. If nothing else the best of its genre. Im now really excited for GOW3 i can say that.
Well thats it. To me, i now have 3 games that made my PS3 purchase worth it. StardustHD, Warhawk and Heavenly Sword.
Im really interested in what you all though of it too, cause obviously mine was a positive experience and i am already playing through again on hell mode.
