because it's slow, it's got a crappy interface, and of course it's microsoft (which alonemanse it's the biggest piece of douche ever) and a lot of people hate iTunes...A LOT of people have gone back to WinAmp...or VLC

Simple podcast support.
These kinds of questions always come down to what u need, and what you like. One person likes this, another likes that.

I use Winamp Pro.

I'll go through and list why I use each media player:
Winamp Pro: I use this for all my MP3 needs. Has great skins, many plugins, and doesn't hog too much memory.
Windows Media Player: I don't even use this much anymore due to the fact that I now have Media Player Classic. Occasionally I'll check out the 'Urge' store to see what's hot, but pretty much, this is collecting dust.
iTunes: I use this to browse the music store and see what's hot and what's not. I also use this to manage my iPod. Winamp has iPod support but I'd rather use it's native software, iTunes. Now my biggest problem with iTunes is that when playing a video, it tends to hog memory and wants to skip a lot.
Media Player Classic: If you are looking for a great video viewer (DivX, Xvid, MP4, Mpeg, AVI, etc..) look no further. This loads quick and plays videos flawlessly (provided you have the right codecs installed).
Quicktime: Never, although as I understand it, iTunes uses Quicktime. Boo!
Yea Itunes should get rid of that Quicktime need.

I didn't like WMP10 but I DO like WMP11 despite the DRM thing..nicer interface and seems to run smoother and faster than wmp10...plus was the only player that works with my MP3 player.
I was never to fond of itunes or winamp...course it's been 2 years since I used them maybe should give them another chance someday.

I don't really care for WMP either. I'm always concerned with file conflicts with codecs. I use VLC most of the time because it can decode everything without codecs.
VLC is very good for videos and such, that's my main media player. For music, I always go between WMP & Winamp. It's hard to stay with one.

I use iTunes, but I'm really getting sick of all the bugs with the new version... It skips songs like a CD player from the early 90's and freezes when songs end.

Well because WMP is slow and well just plain sucks.
I use WMP for DL.TV, but on the Mac I use Flip for Mac.
But WMP is really just something you don't need unless you like to stream Video like DL.TV
iTunes is great for Podcasts and Movies, and their iTV is going to be great.
WinApp is ok if you only use your computer for music.
Quicktime for windows sucks, and if you like Call for Help then use that for torrents, or Real Player for torrents.
VLC: A great media player, if any of those I listed above freezes or messes up use VLC, but before they freeze, just use VLC.
My top 2 are iTunes and VLC for windows.

I use iTunes because it integrates well with my iPods (just picked up the new Black 8GB Nano, sweet) and it also manages my netcasts. However, I tend to open up vidcasts (mostly just Diggnation) using QT as it seems alot less choppy.
I hate the speed of iTunes and the memory it hogs. I used Anapod Explorer, but when iTunes intergrated netcasts I had to go back.

I switch between Winamp and Songbird for Audio. Only open iTunes to put music on the iPod. Yes i know there's others - but iTunes is the easeist and quickest to use. For video i've always used VLC. It plays everything (after WMP is installed for the WMV codec :/ )

Oh yea, I forgot about songbird. It's going to get good!

Basically wmp is a resource hog.
For embedded mp3s I use quicktime.
Offline mp3s I use foobar2000
Odd or uncommon media formats are most likely to play in vlc.
Basically I try to stick with mp3s to use with foobar2000.

Windows media player 11 is awsome. Lots of eye candy. Even Apple seems to think so since they copied the album art view into their latest iTunes.
BTW. I still have to use iTunes since i have an iPod. I feel locked in.

Netcasts? Is that what we're calling them now?

There are plugins for winamp for simulating itunes. Also if you just change your file associations for .mp3 itunes wont even care and u can fire it up and transfer ur mp3s when needed. I cant wait til the zune comes out and everyone *****es about microsoft's music store interface being too restrictive.

I started using WMP, then moved to Winamp, then on to foobar. Now I'm back with WMP simply because it plays my audio files, and docks in the start menu when I minimize it.
VLC used for video.

Ive heard about how many people hate WMP and use iTunes. What do people hate WMP so much?WMP has its place. I use iTunes to manage my MP3/AAC files - but only since I bought an iPod. WMP is still what I mostly turn to for playing back video. As has been said, WMP 11 is great too.
They are not exclusive - you can use both :)
I have DiVX installed as well, and sometimes use that for video, I never use something in Real Player format (its just not worth it), and haven't used winamp in ages (since it became overly bloated by trying to do everything for everyone - it does everything, but none of it particularly well).
