Default Avatar: Legend of Korra

Has anyone else been following the news about Avatar: Legend of Korra, the upcoming project from Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko?
According to The Avatar Wiki it's going to be set 100 years after the original series. Mike and Bryan also said, in this article from racebending.com, that they're hoping to be able to announce more info about it before Comic-Con.
Given when it's set and that Koora definitely sounds like a female Water Tribe name, I'm assuming that it's about the next Avatar after Aang. I'm guessing that this also means that Aang and Katara will have had at least one airbender kid, since someone has to teach it to her.

Hopefully they've learned their lesson and will be sticking to animation for Korra and any other future projects.

This is extremely interesting and exciting news. Can't wait for any potential news comic-con may bring.

Yeah I heard about this a few weeks ago and it's great news that there will be more of the Avatar universe. Hopefully they will explain what happened to Zuko's mom. I love the fact that they intentionally ended Last Airbender with that big question hanging out there.

If by "learned their lesson" you mean made a ton of money by selling away all the rights to Nickelodeon then yes I'm sure they learned their lesson well.

If there's anything to hope for it's that Paramount/Nickelodeon learned not to trust an important franchise to a hack like M. Night and will do the "Legend of Korra" movies so well that it makes someone want to go back and redo the "Legend of Aang" movies.

Awwww....a hundred years?

I guess technically some of the main characters could still be alive. After all, Bumi was 112.

But since Korra is probably the next Avatar I'm going to go ahead and assume Aang is dead.

The main thing I'm interested in finding out is how the resolve the whole "no more Airbenders" thing. Are the only Airbenders going to be Aang and Katara's descendents? Or will there be another solution.

Ooh, that could be a whole thing right there. If the next Avatar learns the other 3 elements and then come to find out there's no Airbenders left to teach the Airbending.

If Bumi is any example, I think that there's a good possibility that Toph might still be around and while I think that having Korra learn airbending from a direct descendant of Aang's would be a great way to tie it back to TOS, it might be really interesting if she has to somehow learn it completely on her own without a teacher.

The 100 years in the future setting is, at this point, an unconfirmed rumor, but it does IMO raise an interesting question about the plot. We've already seen the learning the other elements story and the war story (I doubt that one of Zuko's kids will try to take over the world again), so what's left? I think a completely episodic, week to week story about a fully realized avatar just doing her job without an overarching plot would be pretty boring. If it isn't set 100 years in the future, then what I think could be really interesting is the story of the first avatar who has to figure out what to do without any traditions, legends or past lives to guide her.

Spirit realm shenanigans.

They've already shown that the spirit realm has malevolent spirits like Ko. Perhaps some threat to the world from the spirit realm.

Could be interesting. Especially since Aang learned how to Spiritbend in the end. Maybe that allows you to use your bending in the spirit realm. And if the new Avatar learns how to do it as well, it means we can have all kinds of adventures there.
