DIY tablet

I work at a display monitor company and got to play with a touch-screen controller at work a few weeks ago. I was impressed and am thinking about making my own tablet. I've been looking at hackintosh-compatible netbooks, raspberry pi's, and some of the ideas from instructables.com. And I'm willing to forgo any extraneous features for a light-weight, smaller package. Any ideas/tips for a design? Any recommendations on sub-$100 touchscreens and kits?
