We haven't given up, but it has been a downhill battle against vastly increasing waves of spam lately we're looking into several solutions, but shutting down the forums could be a possibility, unfortunately.

Upgrade the forums, and add the blacklist checker.
Put in a captcha for new users to post.
Block the IP address ranges where multiple spam attacks are launched.

Its not hard is it? When the registration system was built to integrate the content and forum sites, it was modularized so things could be upgraded independently right?

So, maybe you should hire people who actually know how to manage forums, and sell ad space in the margins to fi
nance the endeavor, or confess you'd rather not have to deal with the hoi polloi, and just admit that you ARE giving up on the forums.

They are owned by Discovery... Don't really need to sell ads to finance a few voluntary mods. Heck, I'll volunteer if they are looking for more mods.

That said, the forums do need an upgrade and some better organization. The large amount of individual boards are not needed, and a way to blacklist as Token stated would be a huge benefit to curb the spam.

Fucks sake get rid of the half billion forums. It drives people away. Ever heard of curb appeal? Well it applies to internet web forums as well. Keep it under 10 main forums.

Umm, no. Only the several hundred threads I am yet to delete, and most forums are now cleaned out.

Current shows area is clear, and I am deleting others as they appear. Still working on the archives - about half done - and don't want to tackle the 800 odd spam posts in the Rev3Animals (Seriously guys? Animals??) area, but everything else has been cleared out and the offending accounts banned (not that that actually helps, we need to block a number of Class B and C subnets from posting).

You should have been here a week back - EVERY forum had at least 200 spam threads in them.

That answer feels way too much like "we're just putting this out there so when we do, you'd been warned."
