Hi, Glenn here from Revision3.
The following is a thread I'd like to get some feedback from all of you on.
First, thanks for posting in the forums and letting us know your thoughts, we really appreciate the feedback.
In response to this feedback you've provided, we'd like to try out something a little different in the Gazette - letting you the viewers, decide what we cover and how we cover it.
To start off, I'll post a thread inquiring about topics you'd like to see covered. Everyone can post their input and then we'll choose a topic, based on the number of requests as well as what is feasible for us, slash me.
Next, I'll post another thread inquiring about what you specifically want to know about the chosen subject matter.
Again, everyone posts their input (specific questions) and then I'll cover the topic, asking the questions that you, the viewer, wants to know.
Simple.
Basically, the concept is, you, the viewers become the producers - kind of a 'by the people, for the people' sort of segment, in a way. Not only is this good for you, because you get to ask the questions you want to ask and learn what you want to learn, but we get to do less work - well, hopefully, we'll see.
So again, you produce - you make the calls.
Since we're not sure on how well something like this will go over, we're going to start slowly with content that can be covered internally at Revision3 - like what some people have been asking for. Then, maybe we can move to topics outside of Revision3, such as what happens internally at other companies - getting to know them. In this instance, it would be nice to have it not be your typical interview about what the company is currently doing but be more of a historical perspective on the company - like, where it started, who was involved, funny stories of what went into it to make it happen, how that company functions, who works there, what do they do exactly, why, how'd they gut funding and on and on and on.
However, again, this is all up to you since you'll be coming up with the content and the questions. If this does well, the content options are basically limitless. We can also add elements like - instead of me asking questions from behind the camera (you don't want me in front of the camera - just watch this last episode), maybe you can send in to me a webcam clip of you asking the question, and i'll put that up instead.
It'll be your job to make this show successful, so anything creative like that you can suggest, the better.
To start, I have read through the forums and have compiled a small list of some sample topics that you have already suggested.
For example:
- Brianatlarge - Ooh, and the server... You showed us a little bit of the server but we didn't get any specs! - In response to this: Jeff Rizzo, our CTO, would be happy to show you where our webservers and database machines come from.
- TheHumanEclipse - Could we possibly see a behind the scenes taping of an episode (for any show, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the Gazette)? Possibly see what goes on from concept to completion?
- dugahol wants to see the world of Rev 3 during that week - whatever that is?
- mrfluff thinks that we should make a show about the production side of Revision3. stuff like editing tips explaining the equipment in greater detail.
- jonspence would love to see more of the technical stuff, like wave form monitors and vectorscopes and stuff.
- Dotsona asks: PLEASE! do a behind the scenes of diggnation, I beg you! - (this last request will happen sooner than you think, like in the next episode).
- gmn314 - It would be cool if you could dedicate an issue of The Gazette to giving us a look at the Digg offices! It would be cool to see what the employees do behind the scenes of Digg, and perhaps how Kevin spends his day? Also, if you could interview some of the top Diggers...that'd be great! It would be cool to meet the people from both sides of Digg!!

These are all great suggestions. The last one, on Digg, would be a great place to start once we gain interest and momentum and can cover topics outside of Revision3.
Also - keep in mind, this currently has very few people that can help out on this at Revision3, so the more you can help out, the better chance it has of happening.
Other options that come to mind for me would be:
- an update on the audio in the studio (we're working on it! DR has it under control - you'll see).
- producing - we can talk with producers here at revision3 and you can learn how to produce - research, etc - so your questions then become more involved and thought out.
- audio episode - different mics, mic placement
- camera work
- lighting episode
- photography
- video production, etc
- behind scenes of shows:
- ex: new show releases
- ex: Diggnation, Tekzilla, Webdrifter, Internet Superstar, GigaOm, etc
- and on and on.
So, if this style of format does well and you are getting into it and like watching it, then we can vamp it up a bit and tackle more.
Anyway, let me know what you think of this as a direction for the Gazette - if you like it or not - and then we'll make the next move from there.

First off, I think we all appreciate you starting this and trying to make the Gazette into another great Rev3 show!

Pretty much everything that's listed in your post is something I would enjoy seeing on the Gazette. That being said, I would love to see episode production from start to finish (planning, filming, editing ect). An episode of Tekzilla (or TRS if you want to head down to LA) would be perfect for this. I would also like a 'day in the life' episode with someone at Rev3 the people know (Jay, Jim, Patrick, Marty, you or Prager)

One thing I'd like to see in the gazette would be a documentary-style gazette that chronicles Rev3 from the early beginnings up until it's current state, complete with clips that hit the editing room floor and bloopers, if possible.

Wow, some of you guys have some really great interesting ideas. My only concern is that some of these things look like they would be shows that could last hours, and some only minutes. Is there a length restraint of only 20, 40 minutes?

Personally, I just enjoy Sarah interviewing people in the office casually. No pre-made skits or scripted jokes. Just natual responses and comments by the staff. Thats what I enjoy most of all.

I have been hoping for a long time that Sarah does a revisit to the homes of Rev 3 employees (and digg if in the san fran area) like pat or Kevin and a few others that appear on the tech shows to see what their digital diggs are like what computers and gadgets they own and stuff and talk a little about it much like the old TSS segment she did digital diggs.

I think sometimes a 2nd camera to some of the shows that show other angles of the show, and the people in the show can comment on themselves. Like DVDs I guess...commetary.. people seem to like that. anything behind the scenes is always good, and BLOOPERS! A good blooper reel would great every now and then...
