I'm looking to get a Blu-ray player for my TV.
I don't know if all of them do this, none or some but I'd like to be able to burn mp4 files (specifically, H.264 and AAC) to DVDs and/or CDs and watch them on that. An example would be downloading a HD Revision3 file, burning it to a data CD or DVD and playing it from the menu. I haven't bought a player in years but when I bought my last DVD player I found it quite hard to find one that would play data CDs with avi files on them (without having to burn to a particular format such as SVCD or "DVD video") so before I rush out and buy a Blu-ray player, I'm making the assumption that this is still the case. I also want to play Blu-ray disks on it, obviously ![]() Any recommendations? |

You should check out the LG BD390. I have it and it plays avi, mp4, mpeg2, mkv, Divx, etc, etc. Some it will stream over your network (wired or built-in wireless N), but mp4 and mkv can be played from an attached USB drive. I have a FreeAgent drive for these files and it is great!
On top of that, it streams Netflix watch instantly and You Tube as an added bonus. My kids use the Netflix all the time. My wife listens to her music which could be streaming, but I just dumped it all on that attached USB drive. So far, I am very happy with this player.

Thanks for the recommendation
I have an LG TV so that should hopefully work well.Netflix is US only so we don't get it here. Same for TiVo, Hulu and everything else people talk about around here. We get basically the same thing as Netflix called LOVEFiLM but I don't know anyone at all that uses it. I had Ethernet on my old DVD player and never even used that :P It might be useful if it can somehow integrate with MythTV I suppose. Just to check, since it's replacing a now dead DVD player, it can play DVDs, right? I kind of assumed this was standard and didn't think to ask. Edit: I can only seem to find the BD370 in the UK. I don't suppose you know if this offers the same features do you? I'm finding it difficult to get a full feature list for either (both just say divx). The only difference I have been able to find so far is that the 370 doesn't have WiFi. There seem to be contradictions all over the place. The US LG site says that they both do divx but then the specs PDF says that the 370 doesn't (and doesn't do MKV) but it also says things like the 390 has 148MHz (12bit) DAC while the 370 has 108MHz (10bit) but then the UK website says the 370 has 148MHz (12bit) and so on. I don't really even know what difference that makes. Last edited by ghelyar : 07-16-2009 at 05:21 PM. |

I am not sure about the details on the 370. But, the single best place to get info on these players is here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1124111 which is the 370/390 owner's thread at AVS forums (great site for all your HD needs). you can skim through and find out a lot, or you can just ask a specific question and someone should be able to answer it. Note that there have been firmware upgrades on the 370, I believe, so what they say at the beginning of the thread may have changed. So, you might want to skip toward the middle to start skimming. Oh, and yes, all Bluray players can play DVD's, and will even upscale them to look much better!
