Default Linux is hurting microsoft.

Guess who wrote this?

Quote:

Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market. Competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat. Apple takes an integrated approach to the PC experience and has made inroads in share, particularly in the U.S. and in the consumer segment. The Linux operating system, which is also derived from Unix and is available without payment under a General Public License, has gained some acceptance, especially in emerging markets, as competitive pressures lead OEMs to reduce costs and new, lower-price PC form-factors gain adoption. Partners such as Hewlett-Packard and Intel have been actively working with alternative Linux-based operating systems.

The Windows operating system also faces competition from alternative platforms and new devices that may reduce consumer demand for traditional PCs. Competitors such as Apple, Google, Mozilla, and Opera Software Company offer software that competes with the Internet Explorer Web browsing capabilities of Windows products. User and usage volumes on mobile devices are increasing around the world relative to the PC. OEMs have been working to make the Google Android mobile operating system more compatible with small form-factor PCs or netbooks.

This is nothing new. Its called "Microsoft covering their collective butt". They have to watch their step with the stockholders ever since Sarbanes-Oxley came in to law. If they don't say anything about Google, for instance, and then next year Google stomps their butt on some product line and Microsoft's stock price goes down because of it, their stockholders can sue for non-disclosure.

if you're going to make up your own definitions, you're always going to get the wrong idea.

Linux IS derived from Unix. It is NOT an originally designed OS. That doesn't mean it is a copy...far from it. Derive doesn't mean copy.

This reminds me of the old days 1999-2001 when the computer science lab was crammed full of Sun Sparc Workstations. All the comp sci students had to do their work on those computers.

About halfway into the semester, I went to a Linux User Group on campus, and one of the members gave me a Redhat disk. When I installed it on my spare computer, I was amazed. It magically transformed my crappy windows 98 computer into a Sun Workstation (of course I now know there are differences).

I had a chance to pick up some free boxes several years back. For a while I regretted that decision. Now I have have enough x86 boxes not to worry about it. I only want to have to deal with one platform. Recently i just dumped a bunch of old ppc boxes.

You know that. I know that, but unfortunately the uneducated public does not. Have you not heard about the fiaSCO which is still unsettled? Rumor has it that they were going to morph into another company called unXis to start the same rhetoric that linux is a copy of unix and start suing linux users all over again over it.

Yes this is always happen, but linux definitely cannot replace windows overnight. Windows with huge number applications in backend, but this does not happened to linux. Home users doesn't like to use linux, one of the reason is because linux cannot play game at all.

umm, yet again computoman is posting flame bait threads (surprise). It's funny really, because people take up sides and we get no where. Every time you do this, it always seems like we get to a point where you have no argument and just stop responding to the posts... yet time and time again, you post another thread just looking for a fight that you apparently can't win.
