Question soldering to black contacts in 360 controller, how?

His vid of modding the 360 controller has him soldering the wires to the black contacts that are used for the button and pad normally. Unfortunately he totally skips over the whole process of soldering them on. He shows the wire and then he shows it done.

Ive tried this once before and it was a nightmare to get solder to stick to those black contacts. Even scrapped away what black I could which was also a pain to do. Eventually got them to stick but I know they are not going to last. How does he (or anyone) do this?

He scrapped the black off revealing the copper pad underneath, Then soldered it.

Mike.

No, just scratch it with a screwdriver or exacto knife.
