Local Forward & VNC & Ubuntu & Arrgh!
I've been loving the series on SSH, proxies & tunnels etc, I've been using that stuff for years and had a somewhat patchy understanding so nice to hear it explained in an understandable way without dumbing it too much.
So anyway I decided to finally get around to setting up a remove server running VNC over a local forward to set up a remote backup server. Fell at the first hurdle, it seems there's a bug with the latest Ubuntu 12.04 and the standard VNC shipped as "remote access", no matter what I tried I could not get a viewer to connect.
So I had to install X11VNCServer to get it working & that works fine & had a play around with that.
But in the end I found TeamViewer (free for non-commercial use) just worked better and was simpler to set up. That and CrashPlan (again free for non-commercial use & if you don't use their online servers) has made a nice offsite server.
Hope that is of use to someone.
Now just need to persuade my brother to let me stick a server in his garage....
