Exclamation when signal is clear, why no WiFi

I am throwing this out there to the Hak5 crowd. Why is it that even when my WiFi signal shows 100% Firefox cannot load the websites I am searching for?

I have a Macbook(no that shouldn't matter) and I use a cool little free app. called APGrapher which allows me to see all the networks around me, the security that is used on it, name, signal strength, etc etc. Really cool info along with a continuous bar graph that shows wavelengths as the signal gets stronger or weaker.

I have found that on occasion while trying to use a free ( and totally legal) hotspot such as the food court in my local mall, my browser still cannot load anything no matter what site I ask for.

I am clueless and hate being clueless. I look forward to the deluge of info I know the Hak audience has. Also, is there a hak or a tool that will allow me to set up MY WiFi to get first preference to packet use on a Wireless network?

On a different note: has anyone else notice that the option to "contact" Hak5 is no longer on their site or revision3s?

Some "free" hotspots need you to accept a usage agreement before you can proceed. I have been caught like that at Panera in the past.

I suspect that the bigger issue though is that you are not getting a DNS server, so Firefox doesn't know how to find the sites you are trying to get to.

For consistency when I travel, I have set my DNS entries to use the OpenDNS servers. Set your Primary DNS to "208.67.222.222" and your secondary DNS to "208.67.220.220"

As for trying to jump the queue on packet priority ... unless you have access to the router and can bump the QoS so that you are guaranteed first preference you are SOL on that one.
