Default One Game

I can buy one game this month. I have a PS3, a 360, a Wii, and a PC. I'm big on FPS's and hack/slash games, I want a good multiplayer experience and I prefer local multiplayer on the same console, but will do distant multiplayer as well. I prefer PC FPS's for the fact that mouse/kebyoard >> controller, but usually console multiplayer (co-op, local co-op) >> pc multiplayer for me. Most of my friends don't have a pc that can play all the fun new games so I'd prefer a console co-op experience. Also, I really want some 4 player gaming experiences, everyone always does 2 on local co-op.

For video reference, my PS3 is hooked up through HDMI on a 32" 1080i TV and the Xbox elite is hooked through component (RGB) as my pc uses the other HDMI port. Here is what I am considering

COD4-2 (or MW2 for everyone else): I played around 10 hours in the multiplayer in COD4 and found it entertaining. The only reason I stopped is that I reformatted my PC and didn't reinstall it. I have never played the single player. I have a friend who got me into the series, he is a big fan and is getting it for PS3 and eventually PC, probably pretty far down the line. That makes me want it for PS3, despite the fact that I enjoy the xbox controller better for FPS games. I've heard that they will be doing everything on dedicated servers so you won't be able to do mods or anything, so that kind of makes it a null point for going for PC. If this game allows multiple players from the same console, that would be awesome.

Borderlands: I don't know much about this game besides the fact that a few people on one of my forums like it. I know it has multiplayer and I heard it was superior to the single player which is kind of boring at points. I could find people to play with, but they would be far out of my league level wise for quite awhile. I would definitely get this on PC as none of my friends have it and I'm not sure I can convince them to. And I doubt you can play multiple people on the same console, if you could, I would probably go console, most likely Xbox, unless everyone needs a gold account, which I am the only one that has one out of us.

L4D-2: I have the first one and enjoy it, but I don't know enough active PC gamers to play it with. I've only played through the first campaign or whatever they are called because I prefer playing with others and haven't been able to pull my friends away from the vs modes or survival modes to play with me as they've beaten the game within a day of it coming out. Anyways, that being said, I'd probably benefit from a console version of this game, most likely Xbox, though the PS3 might offer free updates to it, I know valve has wanted to offer free updates and MS has said no before unless someone covers their costs. I loved the vs and survival modes though I could never find a good party of friends to play with as my friends that play this religiously play at college and their off-campus net connections suck so basically they only play with people in the same city as them. I have friends I could play co-op same console so I'd probably go the console route on this if I got it.

That's about it, unfortunately I don't know of any good multiplayer hack/slash games out or coming out soon. I was looking forward to Dragon Age a few months ago before I found out it was single player. They said they were going for the experience that the Champions and Baldurs Gate games had on the PS2, not if you didn't include multiplayer you weren't.

Anyways, long post, any suggestions?

Actually, you can split-screen co-op with Borderlands (two people).

If there's only one, I'd push aside L4D2 if you've played the first one already. I don't think there's enough change there to keep you going as long as the other games could.

Frankly, it seems like you're set on CoD. It has the fantastic multiplayer, a great single player which I think you shouldn't miss out on because it probably will be epic (and even go back to the first MW and play it), and there might even be co-op. CoD WaW had co-op, but I haven't been following news on the this one too much. And again, I can't be positive, but the last CoD had split-screen multiplayer, so I don't see why this wouldn't either.

I wouldn't ignore Borderlands, but from what you've posted, CoD is a no brainer.

Borderlands. Done deal. And yes, it supports local two-player co-op on the same console. I don't know about the gold account thing, because I don't have a 360. I play it on PS3. I have played it online and solo, and while I had a good time playing with friends, I had a better time going it alone... I don't know why, I just prefer it that way. It felt more like a Fallout 3 looting game that way than it does online. Different strokes.

As for MW2, you got it backwards. They are removing dedicated server support from the PC version so it'll only support matchmaking like the consoles. Also, it is dropping down from 64 players online to 18 players online. Kinda drastic drop, if you ask me. I am getting MW2 on PS3, but I am the opposite of you - I only like the single-player campaign. If you haven't bothered with COD4's campaign, you really should try it. I can't stand COD online, though. I am much more a Battlefield fan, and Bad Company 2 beta is coming to PS3 on Nov. 19th for people who pre-order at select retailers or get access via IGN or GameSpot or the PS Blog. 24-players online, much more options and just overall a much better, more memorable experience. I don't know why it is, but COD online just doesn't do it for me.

I did love the multiplayer from Bad Company 1, I played the crap out of it, but never played the single player because it wasn't co-op :-D

As for COD4-MW2, yeah I read a new article on ars about it today and it doesn't seem like its very player friendly. It seems like they are stuck up their asses and whatever problems you have with the game you have to deal with. Also the fact you can't kick people, the game chooses the host of the game, little issues like that.

After watching ep 303 about borderlands, it does look pretty promising.

Though if BFBC2 has co-op mode and has the same fun (or more fun) multiplayer, that would be my choice. Maybe I should see if I can get in on the beta first.

Bad Company 2 doesn't release until March. That's a long time to wait for a new game.
