For those of us who aren't afraid of the terminal, here's the link for the ssh solution:
http://lifehacker.com/398961/get-you...ata-connection Pro: it's free. For us cheapskates who don't want to shell out $10, that's nice. Con: Creates a SOCK5 proxy server, so is (I think) only usable for websurfing, not other apps. |

I remember using PdaNet when I first got my iPhone over a year ago, because native tethering wasn't available (came in 3.0). I've recently tried MyWi on a number of occasions, all requiring a restore. I have absolutely no idea why. I'm a guru at jailbreaking, and just cannot figure out why MyWi gives me so many problems.
BUT, since 3.0 was released, I've just been using the native tethering option (http://gumballtech.com/2010/02/01/en...-iphone-3g3gs/). I'd rather go the USB route because: a) Charge your device while using its internet, b) Don't have to dick around with wifi or bluetooth settings. But everyone has their own opinion. I'm never going near MyWi again, and I advise everyone to backup their stuff before hand if you do plan on trying it (you should already be backing up anyway). When the benm.at tethering hack was first released i enabled tethering no problem. This was when iPhone OS 3.0 was first released. It has worked fine for me since I installed it. A while back i tried to remove the ability to tether from my phone because i thought i was messing with the ability to use MMS but i was not able to. I erased and restored my phone from scratch and everything, still tethering stayed enabled.

In theory, yes. A somewhat odd theory, but yes. It's just another wifi device.

Thanks for the suggestion. I jailbroke my phone because of your original episode, and couldn't be happier.
I've had MyWi for a few months and have found it to be well worth the 10 bucks. One question: When I use it to connect to my Windows7 laptop, Windows does not give me the option to "remember password," like it would for a traditional wifi hotspot. I am guessing it is because Windows sees it as a device, not a traditional network. Any suggestions on how to work around? It's not a deal killer, but something of a hassle. Thanks, Rich |

Since I am also a jailbroken user, I have my say on three of the programs.
MyWi I used the trial version for a little while and loved it. Basically it just sets your phone up as a wifi hotspot, much like the MyFi wireless hotspots do for Verizon and Sprint. The $9.99 it costs is great ten dollars spent (I didn't buy this one because of a previous purchase - see below) and easy setup. Your up and running in less than 5 minutes. The built in tethering hack (google .ipcc tethering hack for iphone) which has been around since 3.0 was announced seems to be the tried and true for me (this is the only one I use anymore really). I use the USB mode more often than not because I don't have to worry about the iPhone needing to be charged and don't have to worry about wireless settings or bluetooth settings. iPhoneModem I used iPhone Modem for the longest time before 3.0 and still do every now and then if I don't have an iPhone USB cable laying around. This is a little more involved as you do have the desktop application installed on your Mac or PC and does require an AD-HOC network, but the desktop app does that for you, and all you have to do is join the wireless signal (usually "iPhoneModem") and then turn the app on, on your iPhone and you're set to go. Both the iPhone Modem and built in tethering app have an HUD to show you how much you have used, and the iPhone Modem doubles it by also putting the info in the desktop app. WARNING: You're breaking your TOS with ATT, so be warned. ~@~@~@~ I have yet to get any calls from AT&T, but of course, I never use more than like 3gigs of my 5 they allot me~@~@~@~
