Default Fresh herbs

Ok there is a seasoning thing. I have a fault in the fresh herbs area.

OK, I know I want to start using fresh stuff. I am not adverse to making my own garden. But, I literally live about 40 feet from a train track. There was an accident about 20 years ago that dumped thousands of gallons of diesel into the soil and maybe our wells. I am not so much worried about that as the daily dump of exhaust from the trains to a potential garden.

You can, maybe, get fresh herbs in stores, but they are expensive and let me cut myself off in saying I can't get them in a store.

Now I have extra rooms in my house and will do something indoors. I don't want to be seen as growing anything else. Well, I will be innocent and have never partaken, so I don't really care about that.

Any ideas for indoor actual cooking herb gardens? All the basics and I think MINT is the herb of choice at the moment. I actually have thought of things to use mint I wanna try. Help?

I have been growing herbs and stuff for cooking for a couple years now. One way we have gone about it in my house is we bought a giant black pot, filled it with a couple bags of soil, and did herbs all around the border and left it on the patio. If you get a big enough pot you can probably get 4-6 plants going in it.

If it is in the budget, some big hardware stores will sell greenhouses (made from metal piping and a translucent tarp). We got one and it is about 5x6ft, it was around $200 toward the end of summer on sale. We keep pots with tons of herbs and hot peppers and it works quite well. Plus then you dont have to worry about bugs.
