A virtual machine and hackintosh both require hacks to install, but they can be effectively free if you already have the right hardware, and you do need very specific hardware for the hackintosh. The legality if this is dubious (in many countries, at least), but even if it were legal you have to be really careful because Apple updates will break your system, and if Apple finds out they'll probably block your iPhone app. The only fully legal way to get a Mac is to buy one. Look for a used/refurbished Mac Mini or older iMac if you need to save cash.

If you want to develop for the iPhone, there are also some other methods:

You can always develop for Android instead...

The best way to get an Apple computer? Um. Money? Like you would get anything else.

Asking to do it any other way is technically illegal (due to the DMCA). This is like asking the best way to get a DVD. To buy it at Walmart or download it from bit torrent.

Check Craigslist or local classifieds. I saw a used Mac Mini, 2 year old one, for $275 on CL. I called about it but it was already sold.

A used Mac Mini would probably be your best bet. You probably already have monitors, so getting an iMac would be pointless.

In some larger communities that have refurbished resellers and sometimes if they have a whole lot of something, you can get them for a song..Schools are always dumping macs to upgrade . You in some cases can even get a real limited warranty. I did that with some g3's years ago. Have disposed of them since though. Check the yellow pages and the web,
