At this point it seems like he's hating it just for the sake of hating it. iirc, not only does he dislike it, but he thinks it's a bad movie. I can understand not liking something, but saying Gladiator is a bad movie is just crazy.
Not seen anything leading me to believe he's anti-Russel, but I thought he doesn't like it after Russel is captured, and the story pertaining to Joaquin phoenix and such takes over, so like, the second 90% of the movie.

Can't really scratch my head at Jeff on that one. I love ancient Rome and had a roommate that had the dvd so I've watched the movie several times, but only for the scenery and action. Actually, I prefer the documentaries on the dvd, and when watching the movie, I would FF to the action scenes now. The story isn't great, mainly not greatly told, it's very unbalanced, as is Phoenix's performance ( haven't liked him since Spacecamp! ). I can understand it being called a bad movie actually, now that I think about it. The script and the way it was directed does make it turn in on itself as a film. Self-indulgent. Flowery MELOdrama. It's ultra-improbable and inaccurate. It's non-specific/composite in terms of what phase of Rome and what character traits the Cesar has at the time - my biggest complaint. Plus the soundtrack is just plain old bad. There's one good piece in there. There should be two good pieces but one is overused.

Now, Gladiator with James Marshall, Cuba Gooding Jr and Brian Dennehy ... ... ?

He doesn't seem to have an issue with Master and Commander.

I'll admit, the political parts of Gladiator slow it down a bit (would love a recut that focused mostly on the gladiators and the games) but it's still a good movie.

Anyone here seen Romper Stomper, other than the Australians ? Gotta be seen to judge Russel Crowe's acting ability.

Yeah, that's a good one. One of my brothers who's not an avid movie goer kept talking about it . . . I really liked the Next 3 Days (don't hear about that one much)

I also enjoyed Crowe in A Beautiful Mind, and Cinderella Man ... But as something a little more obscure, check out The Sum of Us.
