Default Brave: Yes or No on seeing it in 3D?

I know that most Pixar movies are an automatic Yes on 3D. But before I throw down the additional $5 per person to go with 3D over 2D, I want to make sure its worth it.And I dont think the boys said whether they went with 2D or 3D in their review.

I saw it in 3D and it wasn't bad. Although I don't think you are missing much by seeing it in 2D. I can't really think of a part where I was like DAMN THAT'S AMAZING 3D!

When some of the Pixar guys came out and talked to us during BNAT one year they said that their philosophy on 3D as a studio was to use it to subtly add depth like you were looking through a window into another world rather than pushing it to jump out into the audience. I would expect this film to follow that same guideline.

I have friends that don't think there is any value in paying for that type of 3D experience (I happen to disagree).

I say pass on the 3D unless it's playing in a really good 3D theater. I saw it in RealD 3D, and the 3D didn't really add much to it. I know Alex says that all the time on TRS, but I like 3D when it's done well and I thought Cars 2 and Up both utilized 3D far better.

Now, it might be that I just saw a crappy presentation. The screen was a little smaller than the theater I normally see opening weekend films in, and I felt the projection could have been brighter. If I had seen it in IMAX 3D, I might have a different answer. I'd been hoping to see it in IMAX 3D, but Prometheus was still in the IMAX theater. I've noticed that I tend to like 3D a lot more when I see it in IMAX 3D. I chalk that up to the screen size just making the 3D experience more immersive and the projection being brighter.

Well, I moved from Minneapolis to Alabama and I have yet to find a good theater. So Im going to assume that the picture may be dark also. And I hear that a lot of the movie is either at night or in the dark forest.

It looks like this will be a 2D viewing for me tonight.

CinemaBlend does a thing where they rate the 3D on each movie to help you decide if you want to see it in 2D or 3D. I have checked their reviews out before every 3D movie that I've seen (I've seen most of them) and they're usually spot on. Their score for Brave is 20/35 so you should probably just go with what you prefer, or 2D if money is an issue at all. For comparison, they rated Prometheus 33 and Avengers 27.

Good tip. Those scores roughly agree with how I'd rank the 3D in those movies too. I'll have to check out their 3D scores in the future.
