I have a laptop (Early 08 Macbook) with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and Intel GMA X3100 144 MB.

It is by no means a speed demon by current standards.

I use an external USB2 (not USB3) attached LG BR Drive (BP06 - picked up at Best Buy recently for $89) ... and it rips nicely using a combination of MakeMKV, and Handbrake.

The MKV rip is pretty quick. Re-encoding out of the MKV to an MP4 for the iPad can take 3hours or more for a 2hour movie. I am sure a faster CPU might help, but its not a big deal.
