Gotcha, yea I've had ddwrt on there for about two years. Tried updating it last night because apparently the older firmwares had USB issues but I got nothing but errors. I'm still surprised that there are so few search results about sharing drives over the Internet!

Most Macs should support sshfs. Use a port above 1000. Require a key to get into the system, that is disable traditional and root login. There are a couple of other things that need to be done, but it can be easily researched.

Are you suggesting a dedicated Mac to be a file server? I do have a first gen appletv...

Most anything can be a file server if you have the space and the os for the unit can share files.Do not see any reason why not apple tv could not also be a file server. I think they even have xmbc for the original appletv. My brother was thinking about getting a newer appletv, but I do not think he got though. According to articles I have read, the apple tv supports ssh so that sftp or scp should also work..
