I'm writing a short film that will be like the 1940's detective noir films. I was wondering if there were any good tips ranging from filming it to getting the look in post production?

When I first tried out Noir I always overdid the strength of both the lighting and the grading; try and keep a balance between Noir-ish contrast on subjects and a pleasant dynamic range across the whole shot. Also try not to over-grade it, like anything else but it's perhaps a little more difficult with Noir because you don't want to crush the blacks in the shadow areas and such, just try and keep a decent balance between dynamic range and the signature stark contrast of Noir.
