Maybe if we had a unshared T1 line at home rather than a college.

hey, for some people College is home for 4 or 5 years. Plus, even with a T1 line the most you get is 1.5Mb/s. Most cable or DSL providers are faster than that.

Most Universities have T3 connections that are much faster than a standard T1. Some T3s run in the nieghborhood of 45,000 kbps both ways and are designed to serve hundreds of devices. You could never serve an entire dorm though a single T1 connection.

My guess is that your bandwidth test only showed about half the potential through-put because the other half was being used for BT by your neighbors.

Actually, it's far more than that. That was taken in the middle of the day, and I know of at least 500+ people were on, connection is shared campus wide. I also know that they cap any outbound connection at 25 Mb/s. The actual connection is far greater. I believe they use fiber straight into the internet backbone going through the city. I'm not exactly sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is in the OC12 to OC48 range.
