I love Alex 90% of the time, but seriously, how do you say that the Wii isn't a next generation console. I agree 100% that it should be in it's own category but jesus Alex, mario galaxy looks like mario 64? What the **** kind of TV are you playing on? A 13" CRT with an RF adaptor? And saying that the whole next generation experience comes straight from the graphics is such a materialist casual way to look at it when you're trying to say that you're hardcore. Come on man, give me a break.

i agree with you completely but honestly, i was playing galaxy 5min ago, its no too far off from 64, if not sunshine. but its mario, i dont want some ultra advance real life looking game, i want the fun colors and polygonal shapes, that being said galaxy is beautiful, there isnt a single screen shot that isnt a complete work of art

The Wii is a gimmick, thats what he's trying to say, after so long the wii remove gets rather boring and I myself would much rather play a game like crysis that is a true "next gen" experience, than play a gamecube game with a motion sensing remote.

But see Reoze, that opinion that you're giving is exactly the uneducated understanding of the Wii. Look at Metroid and Mario, there are no gimmicks the motion additions for galaxy are amazing. Crysis is a good game too but graphics aren't even remotely everything.

more importantly you are in the minority with ur opinion bc the wii is owning the market, and its not just a fad, it came out 11-19-06, almost a year it has reigned as number 1 console, they are obviously doing something right

I just chalk his opinion up to some people being all about the eye-candy.
Wii is the next evolution gamecube. They just went with the user interaction rather than the graphics/processing power. Just because two of the three consoles decided to go with graphics/processing doesn't make that the standard for nextgen. |

I don't see how the Wii isn't not a next gen system. The only thing that truly separates it from the Gamecube is its control scheme. This would mean that your foremost qualification for a console to be considered "next gen" is for it to have some sort of different control scheme. Using your criterion, the Xbox 360 is old gen, and only the Wii and PS3 are next gen.
HDTVs are the new norm, and I don't see how anything not designed to take advantage of this can be placed in the "Innovative" or "Next Gen" camp. Nintendo's goal was to make a mainstream console that appealed to as wide an audience as possible, that could be hooked up to the largest number of TVs as possible, and that could make the most money (which it is succeeding at very well!), hence the simple-to-use control scheme, pricing, and RCA cable connectivity. I need more than a quirky controller for me to play video games (which is probably why I'm not particularly fond of the Guitar Hero franchise). It's about gameplay and graphics, and, unfortunately for the Wii, it only excels at one of these. |

The reason everyone is buying the Wii is becuase they're cheap, I've used wii's before, I've played the games, yes they were fun but people DO get tired of having to wave around a remote in some nonsensical motion just to play a game.
No graphics aren't everything, but they are a large part of it, like it or not most video games rely on an immersion factor, and when your game looks like 3d pong it gets killed. Wii is like the board games of video games, They're fun, they're "family" oriented for the most part, and they get old. |

The issue at the heart of this seems to be the definition of 'Next Gen'. There's just too much difference in the varying opinions for there to be a clear definition.

"Next Gen" is just that, the next generational gap, Atari being the first generation, etc. It doesn't mean a necessarily better graphics or better gameplay, just the newest version.
