ATI Radeon X1150 Ubuntu Help

If I install any ATI driver from Envy or ATI's site etc., I get Compiz, but then my video looks choppy, can't Suspend/Stand By. If I use the default Ubuntu driver, I can't use Compiz but Suspend works and no more choppy display. It's a Dell Inspiron 1501 w/ ATI Radeon X1150 gfx. I use www.ubuntu1501.com but there's no fix mentioned there.

What variant of ubuntu are you using exactly? Also what exactly do you mean by default Ubuntu driver. Is it the the "ati" open source driver or the fglrx driver available in the "Hardware Drivers" section.

I noticed with both the "fglrx" driver from ati and the Hardware Drivers manager with 7.10 there was a bug with suspend and stand by on my mobility x700.

Also some cards are blacklisted from doing the compiz stuff, but it's fairly easy to un-blicklist (at your own risk)

Whatever version of the fglrx drivers is standard in 8.04 hasn't given me the suspend problem .

Choppy video with Compiz is a sign of a low end video card (or bad drivers, but you said you got the driver from ATI's site, which is a good first step). I had this problem with my desktop, and I ended up upgrading the video card. If you're using a laptop, you may have to choose between 3d effects and smooth video, since upgrading an integrated video card is difficult/impossible.

Meh nvm, it's pretty much impossible. It's ATI's fault for lack of Linux support. I did tons of research on this before, and that's what it came down to. It's not because it's a bad card, my desktop with 64mb onboard plays back video perfectly with effects enabled. It's the specific x1150.

I had a problem with the ati card in my imac. I ended up having to add two kernel modules (mach64 and drm) and then adding additional drivers for some reason were not loaded but needed to be. sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg. I also had to manually insert the proper sync rate and res for the monitor in the /etc/xorg.conf. /var/log/Xorg.0.log is a great file to see what is going on with the video. glxinfo is also another cmd to check things out for the compiz compatibility. Both debian and ubuntu had the same issues.

It's ATI's fault for lack of Linux support..

They release the info about their cards not too long back.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

Chopping video rendering with ATI and OpenGL is a known bug, there is no solution other than to use X11 to render your video if you want to keep Compiz running as well. For example you can set VLC to render video with the X11 module. As well you can set VLC to render video in firefox with a plugin called mediaplayerconnectivity.

I use older equipment so I do not have as many of those issues.
