Hub vs. Switch
FYI: Hubs have pretty much gone the way of the Dodo in this day and age. Hubs share bandwidth across the backplane resulting in much slower performance as you add more devices. A switch is able to create dedicated pathways between devices (via multiplexing) which gives equal bandwidth to each device. Switches are incredibly cheap (some less than 10 bucks on newegg) and are included in most wireless routers so that's a better way to go.

USB -> Serial
On the issue of "They don't always work"- you bought the bottom of the barrel cheap converter. Look for adapters that advertise the FTDI chipset. Instead of being a "dumb" cable, these include a controller for active signal conversion. Although a driver is required, it isn't a problem since it is available for MacOS, Windows, and Linux.
Ordinary adapters fail since they cannot offer the low level access that the serial protocol demands and USB is unable to support due to newer standards. Hope that helps! -Lizzy P.S. - the FTDI cables go for $20 so there is no additional cost over the cheap, useless ones.

LG has a Blu-ray burner version of the combo drive featured in the show, the LG GGW-H20L 6X internal super multi BLU-RAY disc Rewiter & HD DVD-ROM drive. Supposedly it'll burn Verbatim 2X Blu-ray BD-R discs at 6X. I want one. Now if only blank discs weren't so expensive...
