Default Looking for my first wine and have a idea, mobile wineTV list.

I really want to try some wines, but so far everything gay mentions i cant find or maybe when faced with such a vast selection im just not seeing or remembering. This inspired this post.

#1 Im looking for a good, moderately priced wine. More importantly i need it to be available ( in other words common ) so when i go to look for it, itll be there. Or a good place to order online from.

#2 As i was looking through the wines today and was over whelmed i had a idea. Wouldnt it be so very nice to have a mobile site that just had a list of all of gary's wines that he has reviewed with their scores. So if your in the store, you just bring up the site that has them listed alphabeticaly and scroll down and check if its worth getting or if it has too much OAK MONSTER !!!!! , or whatever.

Thnx for any input.

There are lots of sites that do that and while the format is not great for the mobile phone if you have a decent web browser you can get access at least. I subscribe to erobertparker.com and burghound.com both require a paid subscription but they both are pretty well regarded (I happen to like burghound better for Burgundies as I think Parker's a bit jaded)... www.corkd.com is pretty nice too and while I'm not sure it has Gary's stuff but a pretty nice community.

Don't be intimidated by wine. There is nothing magical or scary about it.
Yes, there are a lot out there. Experiment. Personally, I like bold reds, but am not adverse to Chardonnay, I hate Zinfandel ... its all personal preference.

Pick a wine style you might want to explore, and buy a bottle or two. I am biased, I like Australian wines, and most Aussie wine imported into the US is reasonably priced, and very drinkable. We are a nation of boozers, so we dont produce crap (for the most part).

Find a style you like, then start experimenting with different wine regions (Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Bordeaux vs Rhone Valley, Napa vs Temecula, NY Finger Lakes vs Willamette Valley, etc).

Its all about the journey, not the path taken. You will try some stinkers, but while Gary's picks are a good guide, his palete and yours are different, and something he thinks is marginal might be great for you.

Token's comments are rather accurate. Remember, even if you buy a "bad" bottle of wine all that is lost is some money. You live and learn and figure out what you like.

Why buy bottles of wine? Why not see if there is a good wine bar in your area, visit it with some friends and try a few glasses. Bring a pad and pen and take notes. Are there any vineyards in your area? Go for a wine tasting.

One thing to remember is that you may find a wine that Gary has not reviewed or that Gary's shop doesn't carry. You may also find a wine you love, but then go to the store and not be able to find it. Shops do sell out of wine and sometimes you can't get that vintage again. For example, you might love XXX Vineyard's 2004 Merlot, when all of it is sold, there is no more. You might not like the next vintage.

As far as buying online, some states do not allow you to buy wine online. Find out first if you live in a good state or bad state.

As for your "good, moderately priced wine", white or red? Are planning on eating anything special with it? Drinking with by itself?

Brewed by Molson out of Canadia ... and Foster's Special Bitter (green can) is pretty good, but not generally an American taste (you dont seem to apperciate bitter beers).

Also, Fosters are a major importer of Australian Wines into the US - including Wolf Blass, Penfolds (Grange Hermitage anyone?), Rosemount, Yellowglen and Lindemans. Don't be too down on them just because Fosters Lager is "generic" (but is still better than a Coors, Bud, or MGD).

Fosters Special Bitter is really good. I prefer it to the other one.
