I'm going back to college this fall and would like to get a netbook. I've looked all over the info on the eeepc 900 the acer aspire one and the dell e(not much on the dell e yet) I have to pick something under $500. I really only need something for basic web stuff (email, google docs, flash games) IM's and skype. What netbook should I choose? I really would like one with a screen res of 1024x600 or greater. i think i would go nuts using an 800x480. So basically I'm asking for any advice on what one to pick. Thanx in advance for any replies.

If all you are going to do is basic web stuff like IM, flash games and youtube etc. Then go for the least expensive one. Simple as that. If resolution bothers you, go for the one with the highest resolution.
I have an eee 701 and I love. The only complaint I have is that there is no built in bluetooth, and no external DVD drive matching it. I think I'll buy the Air drive then to modify it so that it's able run off of any 5V USB. Xandros is OK, but it's too light weight for me. There is no USB installation for SD cards. I almost 100% sure dell wont offer their mini loaded with xp for under $600. So, Buy the cheapest one and get your self online storage. There's nothing worse than you computer having a hard crash (windows swapfiles aren't too gentle to those little guys). Having your data stores somewhere secure and being able to access it anywhere is great! To summarize: Cheapest, best res and invest money on external drivers / online storage. HP 2133. WXGA display (1280x768). Price points vary from $499 (1.0GHz CPU /w 512MB RAM and Linux - SuSE Enterprise Desktop - on a 4GB Flash Storage drive) through to $750 (1.6GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, Vista, 120GB HDD). Bluetooth is an option. Wifi is 802.11a/b/g (no n). Keyboard is 92% full size.
They are a sexy little machine, and often overlooked ... which is a shame, because in many ways they blow the competition (even the MacBook Air) out of the water.

I hadn't researched much into the HP 2133 but I will do so now. I thought about just getting the eee 701 4g but the 800x480(that right?) screen res turned me off of it. The wiki site had this to say about the HP 2133. "The high reflectivity of the screen also caused difficulties in operating the notebook in outdoor environments. Performance was also cause for concern, with neither speed nor battery life particularly impressing reviewers, and the high temperatures produced."
Is the temp concern really that great with it? The glossy screen may cause me to choose another for I plan on using it outdoors quite a bit. I keep leaning toward the eee 900 or 1000 but at this time I'm not sure I can afford it. Are their any other netbooks for under $500 I should know about? I looked at all of them on this wiki compare list. The cloudbook is too slow for my tastes. I'm not too concerned with the swap file useage of windows as I will stick too a linux disto on whatever machine I pick. I have no reason to use a bloated OS for doing such simple tasks. Thanks again for the responses!

I have run 2 machines as servers (yes, you heard that right) with Via C3 (the predecessor to the C7 chips now used) chips running at 900MHz (a web/application server, and a database server - both used by my wife while she did her dissertation in Computer and Information Sci). They were dead quiet, and weren't speed demons, but if you are not playing games ... who cares. They are plenty fast enough for Netbook style applications. Eitherway, the HP machines are options that people overlook - and they do have a great screen.

Thank you for the information on the HP. I'll definitely add it to my list of netbooks to consider. I wish there was someplace close that I could physically get at these different machines but I live in the middle of nowhere. Thanks again for the information. It could be that I'll go with the HP. Though I must admit the Eeepc 901 and 1000 still ranks top on my list. The dell e may come out on top but as it's not out yet for reviewing I can't consider it much of an option yet.
