Post [Show Idea]: What can I do with an old XBox?

Hey Guys,

I recently upgraded my gaming life with a PS3, and I find my XBox is collecting dust. I've heard the original XBox is a very hackable machine. How about a show dedicated to rededicating the old hardware?

yea man i totally agree with you. mine has been collecting dust since summer 06. lol

i would like to do something with it, but i dont want to rush into it.

...you guys know that episode on 2/11 -- episode 37 they had turned an old computer into a pretty decent firewall. I guess i can do that. But it be nice to have a list of things you can do/ see Patrick do them/some

but yea i agree this would be a good show idea.

Default If memory serves....

About the only thing you can *legally* do is run it as a mini pc with linux.

In order to do any of the "nice" stuff like xbmc (Xbox Media Centre) requires the use of proprietary Microsoft Xbox compilation tools or hacked Microsoft proprietary code (replacement dashboards etc).

Microsoft has not as is not licensing these tools or code for home brew.

There is an ongoing effort to replace Microsoft's toolset, but as far as I remember this is not yet feature complete.

Thus any builds of xbmc (cough t3ch cough) that you can find on the internet are being compiled with illegal software.

IANAL but if you consider covering this I would consult one.

P.S.

I'd love to be wrong - I too have a dusty old xbox :-)

Default Things to do .....

Plenty if you are in a position to risk it - individuals may and or may not be safe - broadcasters will probably find it too risky....

The good news is if you google around there are a couple of good places with instructions on softmodding / mod chipping your old xbox.

http://www.xbox-scene.org/xbox-tutorials.php

For example.

I'm afraid I can not assist further, as I have yet to don my black hat and hack my xbox.
