Most of the spam that hits the forums is coming in via anonymous proxies. This makes it hard to block the actual IP address of the person (bot) posting the spam.
I have been looking over the baned user list and the IP addresses they have coming in from, and already we have reduced the amount of spam by blocking a number of IP ranges for nonymous proxy servers. Now, we don't want to go too far, but would prefer to be preemptive so we don't even see the SPAM accounts being able to be created that allows them to post the crap that clogs the boards some mornings. A side effect of blocking ranges of addresses is that it might impact some of you getting to the site via an anonymiser. I am just trying to get a handle on how many it might affect before getting the IP ranges blocked, or if it is even a good idea to pursue. Any thoughts or comments?
