Enjoyable episode for sure, I hope there are more of these in the future, buuut... (there's always a but)
Wardriving - what no mention of cracking WEP? Using a slightly older version of Backtrack3 booted from a 1GB USB stick I can crack a wifi WEP key on this Asus Eee in about 10 minutes. Building a battle robot future episodes - yes! excellent! I'm still disappointed they cancelled Robot Wars here in the UK, I loved watching that show, robots beating the shaft out of each other is to me pure entertainment. Hard drive wiping - 16systems recovery challenge, well, hmm, have a read of slashdot. The "questions from the viewers" appeared to be all emails, do David & Patrick frequent this place much? I know David has posted a few times P.S. David, can I come and work for you? it looks like you have some of the best toys & workshop tools ever! ![]()

You can come and live in my garage... "Erre Dos" (my first R2-D2), needs about 3 weeks of solid work.
I'll pay you in beer. Making R2-D2 move - easy. Making him look as good as he does in the movie? F-in impossible. Generally, I read the forum but never post. However, after the excrusiating pain which was yesterday's Systm shoot (both physical and emotional, little of which you guys will end-up seeing...), I'm going through a 12-pack of porter, and am actually posting. Hang-upside down for an hour. I dare you. My Gracilis and Pectineus muscles are on fire. I am barely capable of walking.
Trying to walk upside down is nearly impossible and the human leg/foot is not designed for it.
Last edited by dcalkins : 11-11-2008 at 02:10 AM. |

A garage sounds almost comfy actually (I'm always surrounded by junk/electronics/gadgets anyway), but paid in beer? that'd be a promotion to the level of "drunk underpaid solder monkey".
As soon as Systm does the "Build your own transatlantic boat (or plane)" episode, I'm there! Are you sure a 12-pack is enough, I remember the pain after coming home from Amsterdam some years ago - we spent the 3 days there and explored everywhere by foot, all day each day. I was completely exhausted and my feet/legs were dead by the end.

Flagpole TV antenna: It can be done, but it will not gain you anything, and in fact the performance will be worse than a TV antenna you could buy off the shelf. Many hams that live in areas where they can't stick up a traditional antennas have used flagpoles to get away with it, but at frequencies lower than TV, and even there its an efficiency compromise and there is a loss in performance...but for them, that loss in performance beat out they couldn't have an antenna otherwise. Patrick is right, use it as a tall mast for an actual TV antenna, otherwise forget it.
Indoor hydroponic growing on the cheap: Define cheap. If cheap is $50 total, forget that one too. $50 might get you a good ballast for a metal halide light, and then you're still going to need the bulb and some kind of reflector (and although you can come up with a cheap reflector, always remember that metal halide bulbs get *hot*). A florescent bulb setup, while cheaper, will not grow worth a crap. The rest of the stuff for hydroponics (pots, buckets, growing medium, nutrients, aquarium air pump, etc) are not that expensive, but the lighting is going to put you back at least $100 (and that's assuming you get lucky or you can scrounge and you only need enough light to grow one plant) or you're wasting your time. It could probably be done for $200 - $250 for the lighting and hydroponics, but then you still need to insulate your grow room, etc. And don't forget that the lighting will add at least $10 a month or so to your electric bill. |

I saw a couple of pictures that either Roger or Serafina (can't remember now which one) twittered links to Sunday. Just from those pictures I am afraid for the future of humanity.

other than growing pot, the 200lb. beast of a robot sounds like a great episode, and must having a flamethrower is cool, but why not a AK on the thing? awesome show keep it up!

Wow, I thought the "gravity boots" was a tease like Brian does on scam school. "next week we'll show you how to turn Ni-Cd battery's into Li-Ion". But that your actually doing it EPIC
