Default Lip sync with HDMI

Hi,

Originally I used a Pioneer Elite VSX-07 TX receiver, Toshiba (don't remember the model) CRT, and a DISH DVR (S-Video and TOS-Link for the audio). Both the receiver and TV were recently upgraded to a Denon AVR-3808CI receiver and a Samsung LN46A950 LCD TV. Unfortunately, until I can afford to upgrade to DISH-HD I still have to use the S-Video and TOS-Link from the DVR. The Samsung and the Denon is connected with a thick generic 6 foot HDMI v1.3b cable.

Built into the HDMI v1.3 standard is 'auto lip syncing', but I've found that this feature doesn't do an adequate job. I ended up having to turn off the feature in the Denon and adjusting it manually, which works about 99 percent of the time.

While I didn't experience any lip sync issues before using the analog video and the digital audio through the Pioneer receiver, occasionally I do experience issue using the Denon receiver.

The most recent example of this problem happens just before an episode of Penn and Teller: BullShit!. Just before the episode starts, they run a teaser of the next episode (the one about to start). It is the teaser that is out of sync, but when the episode starts (a few minutes later), it's back in sync. With auto sync set to enable, it was the other way around. The teaser was in sync, but the episode was out of sync. Clearly disabling it provided the most enjoyment.

I hope HD Nation will discuss HDMI lip syncing issues on an upcoming show. In the meantime, is anyone else experiencing similar lip syncing issues and have any thoughts on the matter?
