I'm looking to ask my wife to get me for Christmas (Yule in my household) a decent ($100 ballpark) set of wireless headphones for me to hook to my HK receiver when I'm playing games during supposedly "quiet" times. I'm looking for wireless because my PS3 has spoiled me from being tethered to any equipment. I'll be basically sitting in one place, but due to in-game involuntary motion I can't guarantee direct line of sight at all times when playing. I also have WiFi b/g/n set up so I don't want headphones that might interfere with 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi.
I was thinking of Sennheiser RS 130 ($99.99 at Amazon right now) using 900Mhz, but was wondering what other options are available for my needs/environment/price range? I know very little about good headphones, but I've heard P&V drop the Sennhieser name several times and the reviews on Amazon seem to indicate lesser than usual hiss from the RF technology. I was also thinking of the Sennheiser RS 140 ($109.99 at Amazon right now), but I don't know if I should go closed or open-back. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe something P&V can do on the show? (Do I really need to give them an excuse to talk about headphones/cans?) (What would really be ideal, but I don't think exists on the market, is some sort of wireless (non-bluetooth) headphones that have an integrated BT headset. Would need to be able to use both simultaneously for PS3 online chat, so it would need to mix in one ear the audio signal from the wireless headphone signal with the audio signal from the BT headset.) There is a slightly different approach you could take ... get a BT audio gateway.
Something like this. I am not sure if your PS3 headset is stereo or not (I don't even know what out there in that realm - I don't need to be quite, so crank my HT to 11en I am gaming), but its an alternate option that might be worth considering.

Quote:
Headphones - two speakers, delivers stereo sound to the user. Headset - one speaker on mic, delivers monaural sound to the user and transmits monaural sound from the user. I was talking about combining wireless stereo headphones with a BT headset. The PS3 can use standard BT headsets for it's voice chat features (yes, the same BT headsets you use for making phone calls on your cells). AFIK the PS3 doesn't support sending sound out to stereo BT headphones. Anyway, why would I want to cram the enveloping audio from the game through a BT pipe? It's bad enough cramming the 5.1 Surround in the game into 2.0 Stereo. (Hopefully the VMAx built into my HK or SRS if I go with the Senn 130's or something similar can make up for it somehow.) I realized thinking on it later, I can just use the mics on my PS Eye and the PS3 can mix the chat audio with the game audio before piping it down my HDMI cable to my HK (Harman Kardon receiver in case anyone is confused with my abbreviation). I won't have to worry about the PS Eye picking up game sounds and echoing them back to everyone else on the chat channel because I'll be using some sort of headphones attached to the HK. (Then go back to my BT headset when plaing games using the real speakers.) |

What about a cheap 20ft headphone extender cable? If you don't plan on run around your house this a cheap, now problem fix.

Well, if I was just getting it for myself, yeah that's probably what I would do. But since I hope to get it for Christmas... I always thought gifts should be just a couple notches better than what one would have gotten for themselves. (This is true whether I'm giving or receiving.) The un-teathered bit is nice for bathroom and snack/beverage breaks during cut-scenes.

Actually that is episode 91. And all they talk about are wired headphones. I'm looking for advice on wireless headphones.
Also in that episode they are basically asking for an excuse to talk more about headphones. Last edited by sembazuru : 10-18-2009 at 03:32 AM. |
