Will Darik's Boot and Nuke render the hard drive completely useless?
I want to format my old pc and install linux then donate the system.

No, the drive is still useable for Linux (or Windows or what ever). BAN just wipes it nice and clean and renders your previous data unreadable.

No, the drive is still usable. After you run BAN, just pop in your install CD. The default drive formatting tool in any OS will be able to reformat the drive.
