Default Best Space Game ?

Im really digging the space genres right now, so im looking for some really good space games. Right now im playing Eve and excited about Jumpgate Evolution and loved Descent back in the day. Dont really know whats out there or maybe that i missed. Like i heard x-wing vs tie fighter was good, is it still ? Or too old.

Anyway any suggestions as always is appreciated.

Homeworld 2 if you can find it, but that's a strategy game. The Star Wars flight games are pretty outdated.

My favorite space games are Wing Commander 3 and 4. 5 was ok, the graphics are the best of the series.

I would say

Dead Space (3rd person shooter)
Mass Effect (3rd person shooter/RPG)
Sins of a Solar Empire (strategy)

Oh god, I can't remember the name of the game I want to suggest! Maybe someone else will know what I'm talking about. I saw a preview for what looked like an FPS, but everyone was out in space, going around asteroids and space stations in more traditional NASA style space suits. People were up-side-down and side-ways and jumping around in zero-g's and it looked crazy. If you're into the whole being in space feel, that looks like a game for you!

EDIT: I FOUND IT! It's called Shattered Horizon. I'm not sure if it's out or anything. Here's a vid from YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd-2d...layer_embedded

It's by no means the best, but considering I bought it used for $5, Project Sylpheed was a great game. It is a space aerial fighter game. The controls and gameplay are solid and if you are a fan of Gundam or other animes of the type you will like the story.

I cut my gaming teeth on Descent as well as the Xwing/Wing Commander games. Not certain how they hold up, but I'm thinking of finding out.

I am seriously considering picking up Freespace and Descent I & II over @ GoG.

I have no experience with it, but I always meant to try it (Freespace). Anyone know about it?

You can almost guarantee that there are tons of mods including graphical updates for the XWing and Wing Commander games. Worth a try if you don't mind a few "jaggies". If you choose one get Tie Fighter.

*I REALLY wanted to try that Shattered Horizons as it seemed like the closest thing to Ender's Game that I'd ever seen. The system requirements (especially the required DX10) killed it as an option. I wish it wasn't a benchmarking pushing the graphical envelope game and was just built on a standard current engine because it looks like fun with a gun.
I have a friend who loves the Freelancer games (I think that's the ones) some semi-recent space combat ship to ship 1st person game that I can't remember. I think it was Freelancer or something similar.

the x-wing vs. tie fighter games are so much fun, and there was some other space shooter I played a demo of a while ago but I forget what it is.. may have been Freelancer

Yeah, I loved Freespace back in the day. That being said I would probably recommend X3 over it only because they are both cheap and both pretty hardcore space-sims, but X3 is far more modern and thus has all the pretty graphics.

If, on the other hand, you or the OP were looking for a more arcade-like space-sim I had a lot of fun with Freelancer (I don't think any digital services have it so I'll just link a review) when that came out, it looks great and is really accessible for those who don't want to go down the hardcore space-sim rabbit hole.
