Manga?

Why do you say monga instead of manga? Do you also call the fruit mongos?

The a sound in Japanese is ah as in father. Therefore, manga is pronounced with the ah sound as well.

While we are on the topic of manga, everyone should go out and read Yotsuba. By go out and read, I mean stop by Borders and pick up a copy, not sit in the aisle and read it in the store.

@Ghelyar: I find it kind of interesting that most people I hear pronounce "mango" as "main-goe", which is the opposite problem you are having with "manga"~ I believe the accepted American pronunciation is "MAH-nguh" but the Japanese say it closer to "MAHN-gah".

It's just because that's how it is said in Japanese. Though people NEVER go out of their way to correct karaoke (Kah-Rah-Oh-Keh). At a certain point, I don't really mind. I mean, Japanese people don't always pronounce the English words use the way we say them, because it's easier to integrate it into natural conversation when it flows well with the rest of the conversation. Ex. In Final Fantasy 13 they say purge and pa-ji, isn't it a double standard to correct people here for speaking Japanese words wrong but not people in japan for speaking English words wrong?

I think it's only there to be a form of elitism / categorization, meaning if you don't know how to say manga correctly it inherently means you don't know anything about it, which is a little ridiculous. It's like if someone got pissed of at you for not saying deja vu with a french accent, it's a little bit rude and it just doesn't even fit to begin with.

tell it sister! I do have a hard time pronouncing Japanese terms and usually manage to murder the word the first time through it, but even still hearing it and saying it again doesnt mean I will still get it. I hear a lot of MAAAAN-a or MAN-a when I play magic the gathering and wierd pronunciations of words especially when they use foreign terms that do not even exist in any language. But the good thing is we all know what we mean right?

That's pretty much what I say and what I hear in that sound clip. Also agreed with the ah in father.

For karaoke, I lived with my ex in Singapore for a couple of months so I got used to hearing it pronounced correctly.



I know it's not a big deal, it's just that episode 2 of the show pronounced "monga" so much it was like nails on a chalkboard to me. It may be one of those things that when you know what you're listening for, you notice it a lot more.

I don't know about that. Here everyone just calls a mango a man-go (man as in man, go as in go)

I should probably point out that I'm English (as in from England) just for the sake of this thread.
