The issues is that this isn't a "slate." Slates or more accurately tablets run a full OS with a touchscreen.

There are a number of tablet PCs coming out this year that run Win7 or a flavor of Linux with much better hardware.

They should have labeled this as a large iPod Touch with something like Canvas or DX.

Here is an example of a superior tablet coming out this year with everything in one package.

you know last week I would have agreed with you until I looked at the specs on this thing. It's got an intel core duo which is kinda weak IMO. so you are left with the snapdragon in the slate part and some weird custom linux. I think if someone figures out how to put andriod on this thing then we could see some head to head battling with the ipad. as it stands I'm more excited about the archos running win 7. if I can put vlc on it I'd be one happy customer. and maybe the win office suit. The only down side is that you'd actually have to have a anti virus running in the background which will suck up system resources.

What they should do is have about 12 gigs of the latest DDR ram and a 64 bit version of what ever processor and just have everything running off the cache. that would be a nice little pad to work on.

People thinking about this thing as a "slate" or "tablet" device are only thinking of half the story.

The succes of the iPod was not the hardware. It had a lot to do with it, but the most important thing was the infrastructure they put behind that MP3 player - iTunes.

Same with the iPhone. Its just another SmartPhone ... but it has the app library behind it, and it is easy to get to, and has developer support.

The iPad in combination with iTunes (music management/sales, app store) and iBookStore (eBook destination) makes this more than an oversized iPod touch.

It might not have the geek cred of a full blown tablet computer running a full OS ... but does that matter for most of the people out there? There is a version of iWorks for the device, if you want an app, you can go to the app store and DL it.

End of story ... or is it?

Biggest let down is the lack of multitasking IMHO. But the Apple A4 (based on the ARM Cortex-A9 ... just like the Tegra2) is capable of it. Looking over the SDK, I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't an update in the v4 OS that renables it.

MSE can handle the AV fine without a real hit to resources. As for VLC, why? It doesn't have hardware acceleration.

because VLC plays everything. If this is a media extension device then the ability to play any type of video or audio file is a god send. I'd love to be able to host my library of videos, music, and books on one machine then be able to access it effortlessly without having to lug out my laptop. Then imagine if I can serve that content where ever I go.

wow you just blew my mind. If they have a full version of itunes running on this thing I will giz in my pants.

if it's the ipod touch version of iTunes (where you can't even delete your music on the fly, WTF) then I couldn't care less.

but then again the tablet/slate/pad what ever it's called that has the full blown OS can run the full version of iTunes... although if it runs a bit sluggish on my dual core 2 ghz processor then it will probably be unusable on the archos 9
