Well there lies the trouble with trying to label things. They are all cartoons, so the relevence really is minimal.

I love cartoons (I work in animation) and don't care where it comes from. Japan has a distinct style that a lot keep to hence the fans who stick to it.

The main difference between something like Disney and a high end product from Japan, let's compare west and east, especially animation from the US or France that it's more about character acting, while Japan is more style. Take any Myazaki movie for instance. I'll say Porco Rosso, and compare it something like Aladdin. Is that fair? Anyway just compare the acting range. Both have beatiful backgrounds, both have interesting character designs (though I think Ghibli do throw in some generic stuff, but that's my opinion not a fact).

Just to go with something different, I'd go with 'Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓, Hotaru no Haka)' simply because it's so raw and emotional. If you don't feel any sense of emotion/sadness/depression after this movie, something's wrong with you (in my opinion).

I've never seen this, but I've heard plenty about it. I wonder if it can compete with Barefoot Gen.

I've never seen Barefoot Gen., But I've also heard a lot about it. I'd guess it's more 'real' since the guy went through it.

I'm a fan of every Makoto Shinkai's movies (Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days and 5 Centimeters per Second). Very emotional movies with nice plots and beautiful artwork.

The latest anime movie I saw was Summer Wars, written by Satoko Okudera and directed by Mamoru Hosoda. It was OK, I'd give it maybe 7 out of 10. It wasn't as good as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time IMO.
