A friend of mine might be on an anime panel about Robotics & A.I. in anime. He's working on his Ph.D and he's been programming rudimentary A.I. for it so I think he qualifies. I wanted to suggest some appropriate anime to him, but I can't think of that many. I know he's seen Ghost in the Shell. I told him about East of Eden, and Key the Metal Idol. Anyone got any others in this genre?

Macross plus: the 4 part oav, really good anime

Saber Marionette J and Chobits, both dealing with cyborg girls

Trinity blood: has an a.i. character

Gundam wing: has the a.i. controlled mobile dolls

DragonBallz haha, the android sagas

More to your point, here are a few that come up in my mind:

Armitage III - androids
Battle Angel - Wikipedia Paste here: The series is set in the future and focuses on Alita, a cyborg who has lost all memories and is found in a garbage heap by a cybernetics doctor who rebuilds and takes care of her. She discovers that there is one thing she remembers, the legendary cyborg martial art Panzer Kunst, which leads to her becoming a Hunter Warrior or bounty hunter. The story traces Alita's attempts to rediscover her past and the characters whose lives she impacts on her journey. (James Cameron is supposed to make this into a movie at some point, and Alita is cute :P)
Escaflowne/RahXephon both deal with Mechs - although I'm not sure how much deals with the 'A.I. aspect of it' - maybe not the best

Macross Plus / Robotech
Bubblegume Crisis Tokyo 2040 - I haven't seen this but the synopsis reads like it deals with it:

After a mysterious eathquake that destroyed tokyo, the company called Genom supplied robots called boomer to do manual labor. But these boomers ocassionally run amok and cannot be controlled even by police. Yamazaki Lina came to tokyo to find a job who eventually wanted to join a lethal force called Sabers who ride mechas to destroy these rogue boomers

Was browsing another...site for some recommendations and ran across an anime called 'Chobits'

The summary read like this:

SUMMARY:
In the future, personal computers have developed into "Persocoms", mobile computers that look like human beings. Hideki Motosuwa, a prep school student, desperately wants to buy a Persocon but cannot afford to. One day he finds a Persocom that has been thrown away and decides to keep it. When he turns on the Persocom, all she can say is "Chi" so he decides to name her that. After a while it starts to become apparent that Chi is more than an average Persocom. Having much better performance, it seems that Chi might be a "Chobit", a type of advanced Persocom rumored to have independent thought.

The marvelous Nick just told me about a series called "Time of Eve". I think this may have been what I was thinking of when I said "East of Eden". I'm not really sure. Anyways, it's an awesome mini-series and everyone should see it! Thanks Nick!
